World of Warcraft's mount collection system spans nearly two decades of content, with over 900 mounts available. Some mounts have become legendary for their rarity — either through absurdly low drop rates or because they were removed from the game entirely. Here are the rarest mounts in WoW as of 2026 and how (or if) you can still get them.
Truly Unobtainable Mounts
Several mounts have been permanently removed from the game and can never be earned again. The Black Qiraji Battle Tank (also known as the "Black Bug Mount") was available only during the AQ gate opening event in 2006 — only one player per server could earn it. It remains the rarest mount in the game with only a few hundred in existence worldwide.
The Plagued Proto-Drake was removed with the launch of Wrath of the Lich King's patch 3.1, requiring completion of all Naxxramas achievements within the original difficulty tier. The Amani War Bear was similarly removed when Zul'Aman was updated. The original Swift Zulian Tiger from classic Zul'Gurub was removed in Cataclysm.
Gladiator mounts from each PvP season are unique to that season. Every season's Gladiator mount is permanently unobtainable once the season ends, making accounts with multiple Gladiator mounts from different seasons extremely valuable.
Extremely Rare But Still Obtainable
Invincible, the Lich King's mount from Icecrown Citadel 25-man Heroic, has approximately a 1% drop rate. With a weekly lockout, the average farm takes nearly two years of consistent weekly clears. Despite being farmable, its rarity and iconic status keep it among the most sought-after mounts.
Ashes of Al'ar from Tempest Keep has a similar drop rate, estimated at 1-2%. The phoenix mount's visual impact and legacy status make it a prestige mount despite being technically farmable. Mimiron's Head from Yogg-Saron zero-keepers in Ulduar combines extreme boss difficulty with low drop rates.
The Time-Lost Proto-Drake from Storm Peaks requires camping specific spawn points for a rare mob that shares spawn timers with a common mob. Some players have spent over 1,000 hours camping for this mount — it's technically always available, but the time investment is extreme.
Trading Card Game Mounts
WoW's defunct Trading Card Game (TCG) produced several mount loot cards that are now extremely expensive on the secondary market. The Spectral Tiger (both Swift and regular versions), Magic Rooster, and Big Battle Bear routinely sell for thousands of dollars as physical cards. These mounts are account-bound once redeemed and can never be traded between players.
What Makes a Mount Collection Valuable
Account value from mounts comes from both quantity and quality. An account with 500+ mounts shows dedication, but one with 300 mounts including several unobtainable or TCG mounts can be worth significantly more. The presence of specific prestige mounts — Gladiator mounts, removed dungeon mounts, TCG mounts — disproportionately increases account value.
Building vs Buying a Collection
Building a comprehensive mount collection from scratch takes years of dedicated play. Between weekly lockout farming, reputation grinding, achievement completion, and the pure luck required for rare drops, some collections represent over 10,000 hours of gameplay.
For collectors who want to skip years of farming, established WoW accounts with rare mount collections are available on Metammo.
