Is AION 2 Pay to Win? Membership, Quna and Kina Explained

October 10, 2026·METAMMO Team

AION 2 is free to play, and it is partly pay to win: the shop does not sell gear directly, but real money buys Quna, other players sell Kina for Quna, and Kina buys gear on the Market. Spending speeds up progression a lot; it does not replace playing well.

This breakdown uses NC's own product notices for the global service, which launched on 5 October 2026. We describe what each product does, not what it costs, because store prices vary by platform and region.

Kina, Quna and the Exchange: where money meets power

There are two currencies. Kina is earned by playing and is the currency of the Market. Quna is the premium currency bought with real money; it buys shop items and the Battle Pass, and it can buy Kina through the Exchange.

NC is clear that the Exchange is player driven. One player lists Kina for sale, another pays Quna for it, and the game makes no listings or purchases itself. That design means NC does not sell Kina directly, but it also means anyone with money can turn it into Kina and then into Market gear.

AION 2's pay to win question is really a question about the Market. The shop sells almost no raw power, but the Exchange gives every Quna a Kina price set by players, so the more valuable gear on the Market gets, the stronger the link between your wallet and your Combat Power becomes.

Is the membership mandatory?

You can play every zone, dungeon and class without it. In practice it decides how much of the economy you can use. NC's product notice lists these benefits for 30 days:

  • Market access (listing and buying).
  • Kina and Quna Exchange access.
  • Personal Trade, up to five times a day, only with another member. After the September test NC said direct player to player trades are disabled as an anti bot measure, so the Market is the main hub.
  • Remote storage and the Wind Breeze Merchants shop from anywhere.
  • Two Odyle Energy injections instead of one when opening reward Cubes in Expedition, Transcendence and Sanctuary.
  • Higher Odyle Energy and Shugo Festa Key caps.

The last two are direct progression benefits: members get more reward picks from the same endgame runs. Membership is tied to a server and can be bought at most three times per server per month.

There is also a second gate. NC's Trust Status System can restrict Market and Exchange access for accounts flagged for suspicious activity, RMT, botting, VPN use or playing from an unsupported region.

Daeva Pass and starter bundles

The first Daeva Pass (Dawn Legion for Elyos, Ishalgen Mercenary for Asmodians) runs from 30 September to 15 December 2026. Both factions get a free basic track; the premium track is bought with Quna once per character.

Comparing the two tracks in NC's table, the premium column gives more of the same items: for example 5,000 Enhance Stones instead of 2,000 at level 1, and 100,000 bound Kina instead of 10,000 at level 4. Pass levels can also be bought with Quna.

NC also sells a Season 1 Starter bundle, once per character, that includes 100 Battle Enhance Scrolls, 5,000 Superior Power Shards and 50 Resurrection Spiritstones, all bound. NC says such consumables "do not affect gear progression or long-term power" and can also be earned in play.

What players and press say

Steam's review summary for AION 2 showed "Mixed" on 10 October 2026: 13,530 positive and 8,653 negative reviews, about 61 percent positive. GamesRadar's launch coverage noted reviews criticizing the pay to win shop even as the game neared 400,000 concurrent players.

Korea went through the same debate first. Wikipedia's summary of the Korean launch, citing PC Gamer, notes that players objected to the relationship between paid memberships, in-game currency and gameplay benefits.

Our verdict

  • Casual and solo players: fully free. You can level to the cap and run content without paying.
  • Endgame PvE players: the membership is worth it for the extra reward picks and Market access.
  • Competitive PvP players: spenders will gear faster through the Exchange and Market. Skill still decides close fights, but gear gaps are real, and a ready AION 2 account is another way to close them.

One warning. NC posted on 4 October 2026 that buying Kina or Quna from unauthorized sellers breaks its Terms of Service and can end in account termination.
