What the next major update is aiming to do
Developers have outlined the main goals for the next big 2026 patch. It’s framed less as “just more vehicles” and more as a quality‑of‑life and systems update with new content on top.
Key pillars of the update:
- a remaster and return of one of the classic maps
- a complete redesign of the crew skills window
- a better torpedo interface for naval battles
- a new batch of vehicles for air, ground, and naval forces
The idea is to modernize some of the game’s oldest interfaces and maps while still giving every mode something new to unlock and play.
Remaster of a classic map
One of the older maps is coming back in an updated form.
The remaster focuses on two aspects:
- Visual upgrade - lighting, textures, and environment detail are brought up to the current graphical standard, so the location doesn’t feel dated next to newer maps.
- Gameplay adjustments – specific areas are reworked to better fit modern War Thunder gameplay:
- removal or softening of awkward choke points
- more logical attack routes and sightlines
- improved cover and engagement ranges in key zones
So this is not just “we’ve un‑vaulted an old map”, but effectively a new edition of a familiar location that should play better in today’s meta.
Completely new crew skills interface
One of the biggest systemic changes is a full rework of the crew skills UI, which has barely changed in years.
Main ideas behind the redesign:
- Your crew is shown directly inside the vehicle, instead of as a dry list of stats.
- When you hover or spend points on a skill, you’ll see which specific crew members and modules are affected.
- For example, driver skills will be visually linked to the engine and transmission.
- Gunner skills will highlight optics, stabilizer, traverse, and so on.
- The goal is to make crew progression visual and understandable, especially for newer players, without taking depth away from veterans.
In practical terms, it should be much easier to answer questions like “what does this skill actually do to my tank/plane” at a glance, instead of reading ambiguous text.
Improved torpedo interface for naval battles
Naval players are getting a clearer way to track their own torpedoes.
The planned change:
- A dashed line on the minimap will show the trajectory of the torpedoes you have launched.
- Only your own torpedoes are visualized this way - allied and enemy torpedoes will not clutter the minimap with extra lines.
This should help you:
- avoid forgetting about torpedoes once they’re in the water
- better judge when and where they’ll intersect a target’s course
- decide if it’s worth repositioning to capitalize on a hit or set up follow‑up fire as the torps arrive
It’s essentially a quality‑of‑life HUD layer to make torpedo gameplay more intentional and less “fire and forget”.
New vehicles coming with the update
As with every major patch, the update will add vehicles across all branches.
Planned directions:
- Aviation
- Fewer aircraft than in some previous majors,
- but including Hungarian machines and new high‑tier jet fighters.
- Ground forces
- A unique self‑propelled howitzer;
- several light IFVs;
- a handful of other “unusual” vehicles to spice up line‑ups.
- Naval forces
- The main focus is on destroyers, with a particularly large wave of new ships in this class;
- additional smaller vessels will round out the tree, but destroyers are the headline.
Exact models, BRs and detailed stats are being reserved for upcoming devblogs closer to the patch release, but the message is clear: every mode should have at least a couple of fresh toys to grind alongside the systemic improvements.
