War Thunder Premium Vehicles 2026: Worth It and How to Pick

October 11, 2026·METAMMO Team

Yes, War Thunder premium vehicles are worth it in 2026 if you buy one that fits a lineup you already play and you buy it on sale. A premium doubles the earning multipliers of one vehicle and arrives with every modification unlocked, but a premium account boosts every vehicle in every nation, so most players should get that first.

This guide covers what a premium vehicle actually gives you, how it compares with a premium account, how to pick one that pays for itself, and when to buy. For the wider picture of the game, start at our War Thunder guide hub.

What a premium vehicle gives you

A premium vehicle is a machine you buy with Golden Eagles in game or as a pack in the Gaijin Store, instead of researching it in the tech tree. The benefits are written into the store descriptions and the official wiki.

The missing stock grind is the underrated part. A freshly researched tech tree vehicle often lacks key shells, missiles or engine upgrades for dozens of matches. A premium is battle ready on day one, which matters most at higher ranks where stock vehicles struggle.

Premium vehicle or premium account first?

For most players the premium account comes first. A long running guide on the official forum puts it plainly: a premium vehicle applies to one vehicle type in one tree, while a premium account applies to all vehicles in all nations.

FeaturePremium accountPremium vehicle
Research Points+100% in all game modesDoubled multiplier on that vehicle only
Silver Lions+50% for active actions and +100% for battle time in random battles, +50% in other modesDoubled multiplier on that vehicle only
ScopeEvery vehicle, every nationOne vehicle in one tree
DurationTime limited subscriptionPermanent
ExtrasCompensation when repair and ammo costs would leave you negative, a map ban per mode, four decal slotsNo stock grind, all modifications included

The two stack, so the best grinding setup is a premium vehicle played with an active premium account. The order only matters when your budget covers one of them.

How to pick a premium that pays for itself

Lists of the "best premium tanks" go stale quickly because Gaijin changes battle ratings and moves vehicles between ranks. These checks stay useful no matter what the current meta is.

  1. Match the tree you grind. RP goes to the nation and branch the premium sits in. A Swedish jet does not help your Soviet tanks.
  2. Match the battle rating of your lineup. A premium that fits next to your researched vehicles lets you bring several of them into one match. A lone premium with nothing near its BR forces a one life lineup.
  3. Buy close to where you are, not at the very top. Top tier matches are the hardest place to learn. A premium one rank above your progress speeds up the next unlocks without throwing you into missile combat early.
  4. Check the multipliers on the vehicle card. The SL and RP multipliers and repair cost are listed in game. Compare them before you buy.
  5. Prefer the mode you actually play. Air, ground, helicopter and naval premiums each help only their own mode.

Our ranks and battle rating explainer shows how ranks and BR interact if lineup matching is new to you.

The real value of a premium is not its own earnings but the stock grind it removes. A fully modified premium at your current rank earns well every match, while a stock tech tree vehicle at the same BR spends its first matches losing fights it should win.

When to buy: the 2026 sale calendar

Paying full price is the most common mistake. Gaijin runs predictable seasonal sales, and 2026 followed the pattern so far.

SaleDatesDiscount
May sale 2026May 7 to May 1450% on bundles and packs
Summer sale 2026June 25 to July 250% on standalone packs
Birthday sale 2025 (in game)October 24 to October 2950% on vehicles for SL and GE, 50% on 90 and 365 day premium account
Birthday sale 2025 (Gaijin Store)October 29 to November 3Up to 50% on many packs

War Thunder's open beta started on November 1, 2012, and the birthday sale is tied to that date. Gaijin has not announced the 2026 birthday sale dates as of this writing, but if the pattern holds it falls only a few weeks from now. The in game birthday discount in 2025 excluded vehicles from recent major updates and squadron vehicles.

Retired packs and what they mean for accounts

Gaijin regularly removes packs from sale after a promotion. In 2026 it announced two batches.

  • After the May sale: Hawk 209, Su-22M4 WTD 61, MiG-21 Bison, F-20A Tigershark, AV-8B Night Attack and J-7D packs.
  • After the summer sale: PzH 2000, JH-7A Prototype and Type 74 Red Star packs.

Once a pack is retired, the only way to play that vehicle is an account that already owns it. That is why retired premiums add weight to an older account. Our full list of retired War Thunder packs in 2026 tracks each removal.

New premiums keep arriving as well. The Sky Odyssey major update on September 16, 2026 brought the Hawk T Mk 1A (FRP) pack for Britain at $49.99 and the RN Giulio Cesare battleship pack for Italy at $79.99, according to Gaijin's announcement. Our Sky Odyssey top tier breakdown covers the rest of the update.

When a premium is not worth it

  • You have not chosen a main nation yet. The bonus is locked to one tree.
  • You want top tier now. A single top tier premium does not unlock the tree around it. You still face months of research for a full lineup.
  • The pack is full price and not retiring. Sales have cut packs by half several times a year.

If what you really want is a complete top tier lineup, the grind is measured in months. Our guide on the fastest way to top tier explains the free route, and you can also look at War Thunder accounts with top tier vehicles researched.

Frequently asked questions

Do premium vehicles in War Thunder come with all modifications?

Yes. Gaijin's pack descriptions state that premium vehicles come furnished with all available modifications, so you do not research or buy them separately.

Does a premium vehicle stack with a premium account?

Yes. The official pack text says the vehicle bonus is cumulative with a premium account, so playing a premium with premium time active gives the highest earnings.

Is a top tier premium good for a new player?

Usually not. It skips the learning curve of earlier ranks and leaves you with one vehicle at a BR where the rest of your lineup cannot follow.

When is the next War Thunder sale?

Gaijin has not confirmed dates. In 2025 the birthday sale ran from late October into early November, and a winter sale has followed in December in past years.

What happens to a premium after its pack is retired?

Owners keep it. New players can no longer buy that pack, which is why retired premiums make existing accounts more interesting.
