Where to Buy a Dota 2 Account Safely in 2026: Store vs Marketplaces, Steam Rules and What to Check

·METAMMO Team

Short answer: a Dota 2 account is a Steam account, and Steam Support usually restores a contested account to whoever shows the oldest proof of ownership, such as the card or PayPal used for purchases. Buy from a seller that hands over the Steam login, its email and Steam Guard, and that covers recovery for longer than a few days: a direct store such as METAMMO sells to you itself, checks every account by hand and covers it for life against recovery by a previous owner, while escrow marketplaces such as G2G, Eldorado and PlayerAuctions cover you for days or weeks. Valve bans accounts found buying or selling for rank, so no seller can promise the account will never be banned.

Marketplace terms below come from each platform's own help pages, checked 6 October 2026. Dota 2 facts come from Valve's Steam Subscriber Agreement, Steam Support and the Dota blog. This guide was updated on 20 October 2026.

Store or marketplace: what is the difference?

On a marketplace you buy from one of many sellers. The platform does not own or check the account; it holds the payment, takes a fee and settles disputes within its cover period. Quality depends on the seller you happen to pick, and the same account is often listed by several resellers at once.

With a direct store there is one seller: the store. It sources the account, checks it by hand and answers for it after the sale. What you give up is third-party escrow, so look at the store's public record before you pay. METAMMO's record is public on G2G, Eldorado and GameBoost.

Why recovery is the main risk with a Steam account

Steam Support's page on contested account ownership says buying, selling, trading or gifting a Steam account violates the Steam Subscriber Agreement, and that support can usually restore an account to the contesting person who provides the oldest proof of ownership, naming card and PayPal billing details as strong proof. The first owner almost always has that proof; a buyer does not. That is how sold Steam accounts come back to their original owners, often long after a two-week cover has ended.

The Steam Subscriber Agreement says the account is strictly personal, you may not sell or charge others for the right to use it, and Valve does not recognise transfers of subscriptions. Valve may restrict or cancel an account with no refund of Steam Wallet funds.

What Valve does about bought Dota accounts

In its 2019 matchmaking update, Valve said it bans accounts detected violating the rule against buying and selling Steam accounts, that buying accounts to get a higher or lower rank is not allowed, and that banned accounts have their phone number permanently blacklisted from ranked matchmaking. No seller can remove that risk.

Platform-wide account terms from each platform's own help pages, checked 6 October 2026; they apply to any Dota 2 account bought there. Other sites such as Z2U, EpicNPC and FunPay also carry game account listings; we have not compared their terms here. Dispute handling and seller checks are compared in our marketplace comparison.

Every marketplace above holds your payment until delivery, which protects you against a seller who never hands over the login. Their cover then runs for a fixed period, while a recovery by a previous owner can come months later. That gap is why the length of cover matters as much as having cover at all.

What to check before paying

  1. The Steam login, its email and Steam Guard. All three, so you can change the password, the email and the authenticator.
  2. Low Priority and the Conduct Summary. An account in Low Priority is restricted to Single Draft until it wins the set number of games, Steam Support does not remove it, and there are no item drops meanwhile. Ask for the in-game Conduct Summary.
  3. Rank and ranked access. A screenshot of the profile with the current medal, and confirmation that ranked matchmaking is available on the account.
  4. The phone number. Ask whether a phone number is attached and whether it moves to you.
  5. Trade and market holds. Without the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator for the last 7 days, items are held for up to 15 days. Expect that after you move the authenticator.
  6. Your region. The Subscriber Agreement forbids using IP proxying to disguise where you live.

Red flags

  • A seller who hands over the login but keeps the email or Steam Guard.
  • A cheap high-rank account with a short match history.
  • A private profile and no Conduct Summary screenshot.
  • A request to pay outside the marketplace to save fees.
  • A promise that the account cannot be banned.

How METAMMO handles Dota 2 accounts

METAMMO is a store, not a marketplace: you buy every account from METAMMO, not from an individual seller, and each one is checked by hand: login, rank, Conduct Summary and inventory match the listing. So the deal and the recovery risk are ours. Our warranty is lifetime and covers one thing: if a previous owner ever takes the account back, you get a replacement of equal value or a full refund, your choice. Bans by Valve are not covered, because no seller controls them.

We have sold game accounts for years and know how Valve's rules and bans work, so we tell you what to avoid. Delivery is usually within minutes to a few hours, at most 24, with help moving the email and logins to yours. If the account you want is not listed, tell us the rank and items you want and we look for one.
