Questie
EssentialQuest objectives on the map and minimap.
Vanilla quest text describes locations in prose. Questie turns that into a marker. If you install one addon, install this one — every other recommendation assumes it.
Classic Era, Season of Discovery, Hardcore and the Anniversary realms all run the same addon ecosystem, with one important exception: Hardcore adds a category of its own, because a death there is permanent.
Classic Era · Season of Discovery · Hardcore · Anniversary
Everything below that is not on this list is an improvement rather than a necessity. On a fresh character, install these and add the rest as the gaps make themselves felt.

A routed levelling path, step by step.
Questie tells you where an objective is; RestedXP decides which quest to take and in what order. The de facto standard for levelling quickly.
Paid. Free alternatives exist and are slower but adequate.
Shows what your class trainer teaches, and at what level.
Stops the walk back to a capital to discover there is nothing to learn.
Waypoint arrows from coordinates.
Pairs with any written guide that gives coordinates rather than markers.
All bags merged into a single searchable window.
Vanilla opens every bag separately. The first thing that becomes unbearable without an addon.
A long list of quality-of-life fixes in one addon.
Auto-accept quests, faster looting, automatic repair, interface tweaks. Nothing it does is essential alone; together they change how the game feels.
A zoomable, improved world map.
The vanilla world map is a fixed image per zone. This makes it behave like a map.
Auction house scanning, pricing and bulk posting.
The auction house is where gold is actually made. Posting a stack at a time by hand is the single biggest time sink the game has.
Cast bars for enemies, which vanilla does not show.
You cannot interrupt what you cannot see. Mandatory for PvP and for any dungeon where a caster needs kicking.
Rebuilt nameplates with health, casts and target information.
Nameplates carry most of what you need to read a fight. The default ones say the least they can get away with.
Custom alerts built from conditions you define.
The most powerful addon in WoW, and the steepest to learn. Most players import somebody else’s string rather than building their own.
A swing timer for your weapon.
Matters enormously for Warriors and Rogues, where ability timing against the swing changes your damage. Irrelevant to casters.
Damage and healing breakdowns.
Needed the moment you raid with people who care, and useful well before that for working out whether a rotation change helped.
Boss encounter timers and warnings.
Pick one, not both. Most guilds standardise on one so callouts line up.
Live threat against the current target.
Classic has no built-in threat indicator, and pulling aggro off the tank in a raid is how DPS die. Tanks need it too, to know when to taunt.
Dungeon and raid loot tables in-game.
Answers “what drops here” without leaving the client — and settles loot arguments before they start.
Tracks deaths, levels and the official Hardcore challenge rules.
On Hardcore realms this is not optional — it is the addon that validates your run and enforces the ruleset.
Announces guild and friend deaths in chat with a sound.
Grim, communal, and the thing that makes Hardcore feel like a shared server event rather than a solo challenge.
Mob abilities, damage types and dangers on the tooltip.
On Hardcore, knowing a mob casts a fear before you pull it is the difference between a close call and a dead character.
On a Hardcore realm the addons that matter are the ones that prevent a death you cannot undo. HCT enforces the ruleset, Classic Bestiary warns you what a mob does before you pull it, and Death Alerts turns the server into a shared experience.
Everything else is the same as Era — but the priority order changes. Information beats convenience when a mistake ends the character.
SoD adds rune engravings that no vanilla addon knew about. Check that anything tracking abilities or builds has an SoD-aware build, because an addon written for Era will not know a rune exists.
Questie and the interface addons carry over unchanged — it is the combat and build addons that need SoD-specific versions.
Unzip so the folder containing the .toc file sits directly inside Interface/AddOns. The usual mistake is one folder too deep: a folder containing a folder containing the .toc.
Restart the client fully rather than reloading — new addons are only picked up at launch.
Check the file targets your flavour. Era, SoD, Hardcore and Anniversary are not always the same build, and an addon manager set to “latest” picks by version number rather than by what you play.
