Yes, the gear on a WoW account loses value every season, and in Midnight it happens faster than most buyers expect. What holds value is the collection: mounts, titles and appearances that can no longer be earned. If you are buying a Midnight account, pay for what the next patch cannot hand out for free.

Why item level is a wasting asset
Item level is the number most listings lead with, and it is the one that ages worst. Every season moves the ceiling, and every patch adds ways for new players to catch up.
Patch 12.1.5 is a clear example. It adds Ascendant Venomstones: collect ten and you can raise the item level of a fully upgraded Season 2 Hero, Myth or top quality crafted weapon, trinket or necklace. The week of 20 October, the crest cap is lifted, so anyone can upgrade gear as fast as they can farm crests.
- Gear that took weeks to earn in August becomes quick to reach in October.
- A new season resets the whole ladder again.
- A new expansion replaces it entirely.
In the account market we track, Midnight characters at 270 to 299 item level and those above 320 sold within a surprisingly narrow price band. Buyers already price gear as temporary.
Rating: useful now, gone next season
Mythic+ rating works the same way. A 3,000 rating account is ready for high keys today, but the score belongs to the current dungeon pool. When Season 3 starts, the number restarts from zero.
The rewards attached to rating are a different story. Reaching 2,500 rating in Season 2 grants the Keystone Hero mount Breath of Blight, and 3,000 rating grants the Keystone Legend mount Breath of Ruin. The mount stays in the collection after the season ends.
The rating is the receipt, the mount is the asset. When you compare two high rating accounts, the one that finished the season with the mount already earned is the one that keeps its value.
What holds value across seasons
Collection items keep their worth because they are limited by time, skill or both. These are the categories buyers ask about most:
| Collectible | Why it lasts |
|---|---|
| Gladiator mounts | Earned once per season; Season 2 gives Venomous Gladiator's Goredrake for 50 wins at Elite rank |
| Keystone Hero and Legend mounts | Tied to a single season's rating, never offered again |
| Mists of Pandaria Challenge Mode rewards | Unobtainable since patch 6.0.2 on 14 October 2014 |
| Cutting Edge and Mythic raid feats | Proof of a current tier kill before the next tier arrives |
| Large mount and achievement collections | Years of play that a new account cannot shortcut |

Note the difference between titles and mounts. The Gladiator title is seasonal: it requires 50 wins in 3v3 arena at Elite rank of 2,300 or more and is removed when the season ends. The season's mount does not leave the collection.

How to read a Midnight account listing
Split every listing into two columns: what will fade and what will stay.
| Fades with the season | Stays on the account |
|---|---|
| Item level and set bonuses | Seasonal Gladiator and Keystone mounts |
| Mythic+ rating | Retired rewards such as Challenge Mode sets |
| Current PvP rating and seasonal titles | Achievement points and mount count |
| Crests and upgrade progress | Raid feats and Cutting Edge achievements |
A listing that is all left column is a character for this season. A listing with a strong right column is an account you can keep playing into the next expansion.
Questions to ask the seller
- Screenshots of the mount journal with the count visible.
- The achievement tab for any seasonal mount or retired reward named in the title.
- Region and realm, because transfers cost money.
- Which characters are at level 90 and which are older alts.
Timing your purchase
Two dates matter now. Patch 12.1.5 arrives on 13 October 2026 with a one boss raid, The Unbinding of Kith'ix, and catch up systems. Then the crest cap lifts the week of 20 October, which makes gear even cheaper to earn.
Further out, The Last Titan was revealed at BlizzCon 2026 with a 2027 release window and no month given. When it arrives, every Midnight item level resets in value at once, while collections carry over intact.
If you want an account to push keys this season, buy early in the season. If you want one to keep, buy the collection and ignore the gear premium.
Frequently asked questions
What is the max item level in Midnight Season 2?
Mythic raid gear in Season 2 ranges from 318 to 344 item level, and Mythic+ rewards reach 334. Patch 12.1.5 adds Ascendant Venomstones to raise some fully upgraded slots further.
Does Mythic+ rating carry over to the next season?
No. Rating belongs to the current season's dungeon pool and restarts when a new season begins. Mounts earned for reaching rating thresholds stay in your collection.
Is the Gladiator title permanent?
No. The Gladiator title is seasonal and is removed at the end of the season. The season's Gladiator mount, such as Venomous Gladiator's Goredrake, stays in the collection.
Are Mists of Pandaria Challenge Mode rewards still obtainable?
No. They became unobtainable with patch 6.0.2 on 14 October 2014, which is why accounts that have them are sought by collectors.
When is the next WoW expansion?
The Last Titan was announced at BlizzCon 2026 with a 2027 release window. Blizzard has not given a month yet.
