Play TBC Anniversary if you want an expansion that is still moving: it reached Black Temple on August 27, 2026 and Zul'Aman opens on October 22. Play Classic Era if you want a permanent level 60 world where Naxxramas gear never gets replaced, and you are fine with a smaller community of roughly 16,000 weekly raiders concentrated on a few realms.

How the two versions split
Classic launched on August 27, 2019. When the original progression realms moved on to The Burning Crusade, the vanilla copies stayed behind as Classic Era, and Naxxramas, added in December 2020, became the last raid tier they will ever get.
The 20th Anniversary realms repeated that cycle in 2026. The Burning Crusade pre-patch arrived on January 13, 2026 and moved every normal Anniversary realm to TBC with no vanilla copy left behind. Players who wanted to stay at level 60 had until January 12 to take a free transfer to Classic Era. The expansion itself launched on February 5.
- February 19, 2026: Karazhan, Gruul's Lair and Magtheridon's Lair open.
- May 14, 2026: Phase 2, Serpentshrine Cavern and Tempest Keep.
- August 27, 2026: Phase 3, Black Temple and Mount Hyjal.
- October 22, 2026: Zul'Aman with a catch-up package.
- Autumn 2026: Phase 4, Fury of the Sunwell.
Population: where people actually play
Ironforge.pro counts characters that appear in Warcraft Logs raid uploads. For the reset from September 30 to October 6, 2026 it shows 16,284 raiding characters across all Classic Era realms. Activity is highly concentrated:
| Era realm | Region and type | Raiding characters | Alliance share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whitemane | US West PvP | 4,107 | 56.6% |
| Firemaw | EU English PvP | 4,068 | 61.7% |
| Mankrik | US East PvE | 1,443 | 81.8% |
| Pyrewood Village | EU English PvE | 1,036 | 68.6% |
Most other Era realms log a few hundred raiders or fewer, so on Era you choose between Firemaw and Whitemane or accept a quiet server. The Anniversary realms are newer and organized around five realms across EU, NA and Oceania; our WoW Classic realm guide compares them, including Spineshatter against Thunderstrike.
How the gameplay differs
What TBC Anniversary adds
- Blood Elf and Draenei, Jewelcrafting, flying mounts and arenas, with ratings starting at 1,500.
- Smaller raids of 10 and 25 players, which are easier to organize than 40.
- Anniversary changes: a guild bank from day one, account-wide attunements through communal keys, and Heroism and Bloodlust that reset when a boss encounter ends.
- Catch-up on October 22: Black Temple and Hyjal attunements removed, heroic keys at Honored and more Badges of Justice.
What Classic Era keeps
- The original vanilla world with 40 player raids and no flying, so world PvP and travel matter.
- Slow, permanent progression: Tier 3, Atiesh and Rank 14 rewards stay at the top forever.
- No phase calendar. You can take a year off and come back to the same game.
The real difference is what happens to your effort. On Era, a Naxxramas character earned today is still endgame in five years. On Anniversary, every new phase and every catch-up patch lowers the value of the previous tier, and Zul'Aman removing the Black Temple attunement is the latest example.
The timer problem with Anniversary
Anniversary realms keep advancing, and nobody knows what comes after Sunwell. BlizzCon 2026 in September focused on WoW Forever and gave no roadmap for Anniversary, Hardcore or Season of Discovery, and a Wrath of the Lich King Anniversary has not been announced.
A Blizzard forum thread from spring 2026 on exactly this choice ended on the same point: Anniversary means accepting a countdown before the current content is gone, while Era lets you play without that pressure. If you only have a few hours a week, that countdown matters more than any class or realm decision.
Where WoW Forever fits
WoW Forever launches on November 4, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. PST. Blizzard describes it as an evergreen version of original Azeroth that will get new zones, quests, dungeons and raids. It is a separate branch with no character transfer from Era or Anniversary announced as of September 17, 2026.
Treat Forever as a fresh start. Our WoW Forever hub covers classes, races and launch details.
Forever does not replace either choice here. If you want vanilla with new content, wait for Forever. If you want vanilla exactly as it was, Era is the place, and if you want The Burning Crusade, Anniversary is the only official option.

Which one should you play?
- You want arenas, flying and current raids: TBC Anniversary.
- You play a few hours a week and hate deadlines: Classic Era.
- You chase prestige items like Atiesh or Rank 14: Classic Era, where they never lose relevance.
- You want 10 and 25 player raids that are easier to fill than 40: TBC Anniversary.
- You want vanilla but with new content: wait for WoW Forever on November 4.
Buying a character changes the math. A geared level 70 lets you join Phase 3 and Zul'Aman immediately, while an Era account with Naxxramas gear gives you the full endgame on day one. See our guide to Classic Era accounts with Naxx, Atiesh and Rank 14, browse TBC Anniversary accounts, or start from the WoW Classic guide hub.
Frequently asked questions
Is Classic Era still active in 2026?
Yes. Ironforge.pro counted 16,284 raiding characters on Era realms in the first week of October 2026, with Whitemane and Firemaw each above 4,000.
Can I move my Anniversary character to Classic Era?
A free transfer to Era was offered before the TBC pre-patch and ended on January 12, 2026. No new Anniversary to Era transfer has been announced since.
Will TBC Anniversary move on to Wrath of the Lich King?
Unknown. Blizzard has not announced a Wrath Anniversary, and BlizzCon 2026 gave no Anniversary roadmap. Sunwell Plateau is the last confirmed phase.
Can I transfer Era or Anniversary characters to WoW Forever?
No transfer has been announced. WoW Forever is a new branch with its own characters, so plan on starting fresh there.
Which version is better for a returning player?
TBC Anniversary if you want groups and a schedule to follow right now. Classic Era if you want a slower pace and progress that never becomes outdated.
