StarCraft returns in Spring 2030 as an open-world shooter. Announced at BlizzCon 2026 and led by Dan Hay, previously lead producer on Far Cry at Ubisoft, it is the first new StarCraft since Legacy of the Void in 2015 and the first that is not a real-time strategy game.
The reveal trailer is subtitled Dominion, which is why half the internet is now asking what the Dominion is. Short answer below.

What is the Terran Dominion?
The Terran Dominion is the dominant human government in the Koprulu Sector — the part of space every StarCraft game has been set in. It was founded by Arcturus Mengsk after he brought down the Terran Confederacy in the original StarCraft, and it has been the main human power ever since, through Wings of Liberty, Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void.
If you have never played a StarCraft game, the practical version: the Dominion is the human military-industrial empire. Its soldiers are the Marines in powered armour you have seen in every piece of StarCraft art for twenty-five years.
The new game is set roughly seventy years after Legacy of the Void, and Blizzard has not said who runs the Dominion by then. That is one of the bigger open questions.
The Dominion trailer
The reveal cinematic follows a Marine named Holt through Dominion training, and ends with him landing on a planet and being overrun by a Zergling rush. It is a tonal statement rather than a gameplay showing: no gameplay footage was shown at all.
What it establishes is that the Swarm is back and the Dominion is on the losing side of the opening exchange, fighting to reclaim a foothold in the sector.
Not a strategy game
This is the part that defines the reaction. StarCraft's identity is real-time strategy — it built competitive RTS in Korea and remains the genre's reference point. A shooter in that universe is a different proposition from StarCraft III, and Blizzard announced nothing resembling the latter.
Dan Hay described the game as gritty and tough, paying homage to the series while pushing beyond it. His history on Far Cry is the clearest available signal about what "open world" will mean here — large sandbox spaces and systemic combat rather than a linear campaign. That is inference from his track record, not a Blizzard statement.
Spring 2030
Four years out is an unusually early reveal even by Blizzard's standards. At this distance everything except the genre, the director, the setting and the window is subject to change, and the first gameplay showing is reasonably expected to be more than a year away.
What about StarCraft II?
Blizzard said nothing about StarCraft II's future at the ceremony, and nothing about whether the new game connects to its story beyond the seventy-year gap. The existing game continues as it is.
