Phase 3 of TBC Anniversary went live on 27 August 2026 and moved the goalposts for every level 70 account: Black Temple and Mount Hyjal are now the endgame, Tier 6 is the gear to chase, and a July raid ready character is now mid tier. A good Phase 3 account is attuned to both new raids and geared past Tier 5.

Why Phase 3 changed what an account is worth

Every TBC phase raises the bar. In Phases 1 and 2, a character with Tier 4 pieces, Karazhan done and SSC and Tempest Keep attunements was a strong buy. Once Black Temple and Hyjal opened, that same character became the starting point for the new raids rather than the finished product.

Three things shifted at once:

  • The raid ladder moved up. Tier 6 now sits above Tier 5, so Tier 5 gear is the entry ticket, not the goal.
  • Epic Gems arrived. Fully socketed characters pull further ahead of ones with rare gems.
  • Arena Season 3 started. Season 2 PvP sets became last season's gear on 1 September.

Attunement is the first thing to check

Both Phase 3 raids are attunement gated, the same way Karazhan, SSC and Tempest Keep were. A geared character without the attunements cannot join a Black Temple or Hyjal raid, so the gear is half useful until someone does the quest work.

Mount Hyjal: The Vials of Eternity

Hyjal access comes from The Vials of Eternity questline in the Caverns of Time. The quest asks for Vashj's Vial Remnant from Lady Vashj in Serpentshrine Cavern and Kael's Vial Remnant from Kael'thas Sunstrider in Tempest Keep. It also grants 3,000 reputation with The Scale of the Sands.

That makes the Hyjal attunement a quiet proof of progress: the character has been in kills of the two Phase 2 end bosses.

Black Temple: The Tablets of Baa'ri chain

Black Temple access starts with The Tablets of Baa'ri questline, and the starting NPC depends on whether the character sided with the Aldor or the Scryers. Ask the seller for a screenshot of the completed chain, not just a statement in the title.

A Hyjal attunement is harder to fake than a gear score. Gear can be borrowed, swapped or inflated by an addon, but the vials only come from two specific Phase 2 boss kills.

Gear score after Phase 3

Gear score is an addon number, not an official Blizzard stat, but it is still the fastest way to compare level 70 characters. The problem is that the scale drifted upward with every phase.

Across public level 70 listings we tracked in early October 2026, characters advertising 2,000 to 2,200 gear score were common on Spineshatter and Thunderstrike. A year of progression compressed into a few months means the old thresholds no longer describe the market.

Gear scoreWhat it usually means in Phase 3
Under 1,500Levelling or early heroic gear, not raid ready
1,500 to 1,800Karazhan and early Phase 2 level, needs work
1,800 to 2,000Solid Tier 5 character, ready to start Phase 3
2,000 and aboveTier 5 complete with Tier 6 or Epic Gems starting to show

Treat these bands as a rough guide. Spec matters: a healer and a tank with the same number play very different roles, and PvP gear inflates the score without helping in a raid.

What still holds value

Some items and titles keep their worth across phases because they are rare or tied to a finished season:

  • Arena titles and Gladiator rewards from Seasons 1 and 2. Those seasons are over, so the titles are fixed in number.
  • Named rare drops such as Warglaives of Azzinoth from Illidan, which now drop in Phase 3.
  • The Amani War Bear. It stays obtainable for the whole of TBC and goes away only when Wrath content arrives, so it is not urgent yet.
  • Professions at 375 and 280% flying. They are small extras, but buyers notice when they are missing.

Multi character bundles add less than they seem. Most buyers play one main, so an extra level 70 alt is a bonus rather than a price multiplier.

What is coming next

Zul'Aman is listed as Phase 3.5 and the Sunwell Plateau as Phase 4, both scheduled for autumn 2026 without confirmed dates. Each one will push the gear line up again, so a character bought today should either be attuned and ready to raid now or be priced as a project.

The other date that matters is 4 November 2026, when WoW Forever launches globally on fresh realms. Some Classic players will move to it, which can change how active your Anniversary realm feels over the winter.

A Wrath of the Lich King Anniversary has not been officially announced, so any plan built around it is speculation for now.

Frequently asked questions

When did TBC Anniversary Phase 3 start?

Phase 3 went live on 27 August 2026 at 3:00 pm PDT on all Anniversary realms, opening Black Temple and Mount Hyjal. Arena Season 3 followed on 1 September.

Do I need an attunement for Black Temple?

Yes. Both Phase 3 raids are attunement gated. Black Temple access starts with The Tablets of Baa'ri questline, and Hyjal needs The Vials of Eternity.

What gear score is good for Phase 3?

Around 1,800 to 2,000 with Tier 5 is a solid start for Black Temple and Hyjal. Above 2,000 usually means Tier 6 or Epic Gems are already in place. Spec and attunements matter as much as the number.

When is Zul'Aman coming to TBC Anniversary?

Blizzard has placed Zul'Aman in autumn 2026 as Phase 3.5 but has not given an exact date. Dates you see on community roadmaps are estimates.

Is the Amani War Bear still obtainable?

Yes. The timed Zul'Aman run reward stays available for the whole of The Burning Crusade and is only removed when Wrath of the Lich King content arrives.
