Pick a job

Best job for each playstyle

beginners

I/L Wizard, Cleric, Fighter

henesys.gg rates Fighter(Hero), Cleric(Bishop), I/L Wizard as Low difficulty; MeowDB says there is 'no universal beginner pick' but highlights Cleric (Heal/Bless), I/L (6-target Thunder Bolt + Teleport), Assassin (400px range + Haste)

solo

Fighter, Cleric, Hunter

MeowDB: solo grinding = AoE DPS + mobility + range + survival; Fighter S in AoE and Damage/MP with high EHP; Cleric top EHP; Hunter S AoE + range but fragile. Meso-seller blog (MMOEXP) also picks Cleric and Hunter/Crossbowman for safe solo

mesos

I/L Wizard, Fighter

Only commercial blogs rate this: MMOEXP calls I/L and Fighter top farmers (mobbing), Cleric budget option. Assassin has star costs; Bandit has no AoE at launch

bossing

Bandit

Bandit has the highest single-target DPS in MeowDB's L70 benchmark (Savage Blow); Assassin/Fighter/Hunter next (A). Jr. Balrog/Mushmom/Shade/Zombie Mushmom/Mano are the launch bosses

party

Cleric, Fighter, Assassin/Bandit

Cleric Heal/Bless (support S); Fighter Rage +40 Attack; Haste for thieves; mages get Meditation. Spearman has no party buff until Hyper Body (3rd job)

There is no official tier list; these picks come from level-70 database benchmarks and guide recommendations, which do not fully agree.

How Classic jobs differ from the original

  • Level cap 100 at Founder's Access/launch; 1st job Lv10, 2nd job Lv30; 3rd job (Lv70, El Nath) excluded from Founder's Access and initial Grand Launch build along with Orbis/El Nath
  • No stat requirements for job advancement (e.g. a 4-INT Beginner can become a Warrior)
  • Rush moved into 2nd job for Fighter, Page and Spearman (launch: 15 MP at max, 6 targets, 2s cooldown); Power Guard moved to 3rd job (Crusader/White Knight); Hyper Body stays Dragon Knight only
  • All 2nd-job Final Attack skills cut from 50% to 25% proc chance between COT2 and launch
  • Slash Blast hits up to 6 mobs (was 4 in COT2); Iron Arrow 4->6 targets; Cleric Holy Arrow 3 targets/60 -> 1 target/160; Bandit Steal buff 30->60s
  • Haste weaker than 2008 version: +30 Speed/+10 Jump vs +40/+20
  • Cleric Heal damage considerably lower than pre-Big Bang
  • HP washing removed: per-level HP/MP gain is fixed per class, no INT scaling (based on COT1 data, may differ at launch)
  • Max HP Increase gives an immediate % of base Max HP instead of a flat per-level bonus; base HP raised for all classes
  • Ranged classes shoot at point-blank range instead of the old melee swing; claw punching still exists for thieves
  • 2nd-job SP cannot be spent on 1st-job skills; AP Reset and SP Reset Scrolls cost 7,000 NX each (Cash Shop)
  • Pirates and the Nautilus start area are not in the initial release

Classic jobs FAQ

What classes are in MapleStory Classic?

Four Explorer classes, Warrior, Magician, Bowman and Thief, with ten second jobs: Fighter, Page and Spearman; Fire/Poison Wizard, Ice/Lightning Wizard and Cleric; Hunter and Crossbowman; Assassin and Bandit. Pirate is not in the Global launch.

When do you get 1st and 2nd job in MapleStory Classic?

All four first jobs at level 10, Magician included, with no stat requirement. Second job at level 30 from the same instructor, after a test: collect 30 Dark Marbles and trade them for The Proof of a Hero.

Is there 3rd job in MapleStory Classic?

Not at launch. Third job at level 70 in El Nath was in the August test, but Orbis, El Nath and 3rd job were held back from the launch build to be added later. The level cap is 100.

What is the best class in MapleStory Classic?

No source agrees on one. Database benchmarks at level 70 put Bandit highest in single-target damage, Fighter best at area damage and damage per MP, and Cleric best at survival and support. Fighter, Cleric and Ice/Lightning Wizard are the usual beginner picks.

Can you reset AP and SP in MapleStory Classic?

Yes, with the AP Reset and SP Reset Scrolls from the Cash Shop, 7,000 NX each. Second-job SP cannot be spent on first-job skills.
