To change your Valorant name, sign in at account.riotgames.com, edit your Riot ID (game name and tagline) and save. The change is free, but you get one every 90 days, and it applies to every Riot game on that account, not just Valorant.

What your Valorant name actually is
Valorant does not have its own display name. It shows your Riot ID, the identifier shared across every Riot game. A Riot ID has two parts: the game name, which everyone sees in matches, and the tagline after the # sign. Riot's own example is "EarlGreyTeemo#sip".
Because game names do not need to be unique, the tagline is what tells two players with the same name apart. That is also why friends add you by the full Riot ID, tagline included.
- Game name: shown in the scoreboard, kill feed and party.
- Tagline: shown after the #, used to find and add you.
- Username: your login. Nobody sees it in game, and it is not your Riot ID.
How to change your Riot ID step by step
- Go to account.riotgames.com and sign in with your username and password.
- Open the Riot ID section of your account settings.
- Enter the new game name and tagline.
- Click Save Changes.
League of Legends and TFT players on PC also have an in-client route through Shop, then Account, then the Riot ID Change offer. Riot's article lists that in-client route only for League and TFT, so for Valorant the account page is the place to do it.

The 90-day cooldown and its one exception
Riot's support article is direct: you can change your Riot ID for free on a 90-day cooldown, and "there's no way to alter your Riot ID outside of the free change." Changing only the tagline still uses your change, because the tagline is part of the Riot ID.
The one exception is harassment. If you changed your ID within the last 90 days and are being harassed because of it, Riot asks you to contact Player Support rather than wait out the timer.
The cooldown travels with the account, not with the person. If an account was renamed shortly before it changed hands, the new owner inherits whatever is left of those 90 days, so the first thing to ask is whether a free name change is available right now.
Name rules: what Riot will reject
Both parts of the Riot ID must be alphanumeric. Game names run from 3 to 16 characters and taglines from 3 to 5. Riot rejects names and taglines that are offensive or inappropriate.
Some older Riot accounts, especially ones first created for League of Legends, still carry a region-code tagline such as #EUW or #NA. Once you replace it, Riot does not let you pick a region code again, so keep it if you like the look.
| Part | Length | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Game name | 3 to 16 characters | Does not need to be unique |
| Tagline | 3 to 5 characters | Tells apart players who share a game name |
| Login username | Letters and numbers | Globally unique, private login |
Riot ID vs username vs email
These three get mixed up constantly, and the difference matters for account security. Your username is what you type to log in. Riot made usernames globally unique, and accounts that had to pick a new one were told that once the new username is set "it can't be changed again." Your email is where Riot sends verification codes and recovery links.
- Riot ID: public, free to change every 90 days.
- Username: private, effectively fixed.
- Email: private, managed in your Riot account settings, and the key to recovery.
Renaming an account changes how others see it. It does nothing to who controls it. Whoever controls the email can reset the password, which is why control of the email matters far more than the name.
The same logic applies when you buy a Valorant account: the name is the last thing to sort out, after the email.
Changing the name on a bought Valorant account
Most buyers want a fresh name straight after delivery, which is reasonable. With a newly bought account, change things in a sensible order.
- Secure the Riot account email and set a new password first.
- Turn on multi-factor authentication with your own device.
- Then change the Riot ID, if the 90-day cooldown allows it.
Region does not change with the name. Each account stays on its shard, and Riot only moves accounts to match where you live, once every 90 days. Players in Europe can start with our EU Valorant accounts, and our guide on where to buy a Valorant account safely covers the rest of the handover.

Hiding your name without changing it
If you only want privacy, you do not need to spend your name change. In Valorant, open Settings, then the General tab, then the Privacy section. You can hide your Riot ID from players outside your party and show generic names for other players. Friends still see you, and reporting still works.
Frequently asked questions
Is changing your Valorant name free?
Yes. Riot ID changes are free. The limit is the cooldown: one change every 90 days, with no paid option to change sooner.
How often can you change your Riot ID?
Once every 90 days. Changing only the tagline counts as a full change. The only exception is harassment tied to your Riot ID, handled by Player Support.
Does changing my Valorant name change it in League of Legends?
Yes. Your Riot ID is shared across every Riot game on the account, so the new name appears in League of Legends, TFT and other Riot titles too.
Can two players have the same Valorant name?
Yes. Game names do not need to be unique. The tagline after the # separates players with the same game name.
Can I change my Riot login username?
Generally no. Riot asked some accounts to choose a globally unique username, and once set it cannot be changed again. Your Riot ID is a separate, public name.
Does a name change reset my rank or skins?
No. A Riot ID change only alters the displayed name. Rank, skins, agents and region stay on the account exactly as before.
