A Valorant smurf or "ranked-ready" account is a secondary account that has already reached account level 20, the level Riot requires before Competitive unlocks. Ranked-ready means you can queue for placements right away; it does not mean the account already has a rank, and since 2025 high-ranked accounts also need Riot Mobile verification before they can play Competitive.

What "smurf" and "ranked-ready" actually mean
In Valorant slang, a smurf is any account a player uses besides their main. Sellers and buyers describe these accounts in a few standard ways, and the labels matter because they tell you what work is already done and what is left for you.
- Ranked-ready / unranked: level 20 or higher, placements not played. You choose where the account starts.
- Ranked account: placements done, a visible rank such as Gold 2 or Diamond 1, plus that rank's history.
- Skin account: the value sits in the collection; level and rank are a bonus.
Our Valorant ranked and ranked-ready accounts category lists both kinds.
The level 20 requirement
Riot's Competitive FAQ states that "you'll need to be at least Account Level 20 before gaining access to Competitive Mode." The rule arrived in Episode 4 Act 1 as an anti-smurfing step. Before that, a new account only had to win 10 unrated matches.

How account XP (AP) works
Account level rises with every 5,000 Account Points (AP). The official VALORANT Wiki lists how much AP a match pays, and the rate drops as the account grows. That front-loads progress: the first five levels come quickly, while levels 16 to 20 are the slow stretch.
| Account level | First win of the day | Per match win | Per minute played |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 to 5 | 5,000 AP | 250 AP | 50 AP |
| 6 to 10 | 4,000 AP | 200 AP | 40 AP |
| 11 to 15 | 3,000 AP | 150 AP | 30 AP |
| 16 to 20 | 2,000 AP | 100 AP | 20 AP |
| 21 and up | 1,000 AP | 50 AP | 10 AP |
How long it takes in practice
Going from level 1 to level 20 means 19 level-ups, or 95,000 AP. Below level 6, one first win of the day is a full level on its own. Between levels 16 and 20, a 30-minute win pays 700 AP (600 for time plus 100 for the win), so a level takes about seven such wins without the daily bonus.
That is why the daily first win matters so much. A player who logs in every day for one win levels far faster per hour than one who plays a single long weekend session. Short modes such as Spike Rush are a common way to collect that daily win quickly.
Skipping that grind is the main reason players buy a Valorant smurf account instead of leveling a new one.
Placements: what happens on the first ranked games
Once an account reaches level 20, Competitive unlocks. A new account plays 5 placement matches before it shows a rank. Since patch 11.00 (June 2025) the highest rank anyone can place into is Ascendant 3, up from Ascendant 1 before.
Valorant has nine tiers: Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Ascendant, Immortal and Radiant. Every tier except Radiant has three divisions, and Radiant is reserved for the top 500 players of a region. There is no rank decay, so a ranked account keeps its rank while unused. For a full breakdown, see our Valorant ranks guide and the ranks section of the Valorant hub.
A ranked-ready account is the only kind where your own results set the rank. Five strong placement games can land you far above where a bought ranked account started, while five bad ones can leave a fresh account with a long climb ahead.
Riot Mobile MFA: the 2025 to 2026 change buyers miss
Riot now ties Competitive access to its Riot Mobile app for some accounts. According to Riot's MFA FAQ, two groups must enable Riot Mobile multi-factor authentication to keep playing Competitive: accounts ranked Ascendant or higher, and accounts Riot suspects are shared between people. Other modes are not affected.
| Region | Requirement live since |
|---|---|
| BR, KR, LATAM, NA | 28 October 2025 |
| EU | 21 January 2026 |
| APAC | 18 February 2026 |
The FAQ adds that an account which reaches Ascendant "needs to verify, with no expiration date", so the rule stays even if the rank later drops. Only Riot Mobile counts; a generic authenticator app does not. In patch 13.01 (July 2026) Riot also added tools against rank manipulation, with penalties that include suspensions and rank reversions.

Region: the setting you cannot fix later
Every Valorant account belongs to one shard: AP, EU, KR, BR, LATAM or NA. Your shard decides which servers and players you can match with. Riot's Account Transfer FAQ allows a region change only to match where you physically live, and after a transfer you cannot transfer again for 90 days.
A transfer keeps skins, agents, loadout and account level, but it drops current ranked season progress, match history and MMR. The exception is moves between NA, LATAM and BR, where all data carries over. For a ranked-ready buyer, the takeaway is simple: buy on the shard you will play on. Players in Europe can start with our EU Valorant accounts.
Checklist before you buy a ranked-ready account
- Level: 20 or higher, shown in the screenshots or on delivery.
- Rank status: unranked (placements not played) or the exact current rank.
- Region: the same shard you live and play on.
- MFA: if the account ever reached Ascendant, confirm Riot Mobile is free for you to link.
- Email: you get the Riot account email, so you can secure it yourself.
No seller can prevent that. What a seller can cover is the most common real problem: the previous owner recovering the account. More checks are in our guide on what to look for when buying a Valorant account.
Frequently asked questions
What level do you need for ranked in Valorant?
Account level 20. Riot introduced the requirement in Episode 4 Act 1, replacing the earlier rule of winning 10 unrated matches.
How many placement matches does a new Valorant account play?
Five. The account shows its first rank after five Competitive games, and the highest possible placement is Ascendant 3 since patch 11.00.
Does a ranked-ready account come with a rank?
No. Ranked-ready means level 20 or higher with placements still unplayed. The rank comes from your own five placement games.
Do I need Riot Mobile to play Competitive?
Only if the account has ever been Ascendant or higher, or Riot suspects it is shared. Then Riot Mobile MFA is required for Competitive in every region.
Can I move a bought account to another region?
Only if you actually live in that region, and only once every 90 days. Ranked season progress and MMR do not transfer, except between NA, LATAM and BR.
Does Valorant rank decay?
No. Riot's Competitive FAQ says ranks do not decay with inactivity, though Immortal and Radiant players can slide down the leaderboard.
