As of November 2026 there are four distinct ways to play Classic-era World of Warcraft, and they are not interchangeable. An account is tied to the version it was made on, so knowing the difference is the difference between buying what you wanted and buying something you cannot use.
The short version
| Version | Level cap | New content? | Character deletion on death |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forever | 60, permanent | Yes — Spring and Summer 2027 updates announced | No |
| Classic Era | 60 | No — frozen at 1.13 | No |
| Season of Discovery | 60 | Seasonal, resets | No |
| Hardcore | 60 | No | Yes |
| TBC Anniversary | 70 | Progresses through TBC phases | No |
Forever
Vanilla Azeroth continued forward. Around 1,000 new quests, four new zones, nine new dungeons, three raids at 10, 20 and 40 players from 9 December, and a new playable race — the Skyborne. The cap is 60 and Blizzard’s roadmap adds content sideways, not upward: Hardcore in winter, then major updates in Spring and Summer 2027. Line-by-line comparison: Forever vs Classic Era.
This is the only version where the game is still being made. Everything else is either finished or on a timer.
Classic Era
Vanilla exactly as it was, permanently. No new content and none planned. Realms are stable and populations are small but committed. An Era character keeps its value indefinitely for the same reason it will never do anything new.
Season of Discovery
Vanilla with experimental rune abilities and reworked raids, run as seasons. The catch is in the name: seasons end. Progress made in one does not carry into the next in the way a permanent realm does, so the value of an SoD account is tied to how much of the current season is left.
Hardcore
Vanilla with one rule: death is permanent and the character is gone. That single change is what makes a levelled Hardcore character worth buying — the hours behind it cannot be redone cheaply, and every hour after purchase carries the same risk.
It is also the version where buying carries the most risk of a different kind. A Hardcore account that dies is worth nothing, and it can die in the first hour you play it.
TBC Anniversary
The Burning Crusade re-run on a schedule, launched February 2026 and progressing through phases — Phase 3 went live on 27 August 2026. Cap is 70. Value tracks the current phase: a character geared for the content that is live now is worth more than one geared for content that closed a phase ago.
Which to buy an account on
It depends on what you want from it, and the honest answer differs by version:
- You want to play the newest content — Forever. It is the only one still receiving it.
- You want something that keeps its value — Forever or Classic Era. Neither has a cap raise coming to obsolete your character.
- You want current raid progression — TBC Anniversary, matched to the live phase.
- You want the thrill — Hardcore, understanding that you can lose it in an evening.
- Be careful with — Season of Discovery late in a season, where you are buying into something with a known end date.
One thing that applies to all of them
The account is bound to a Battle.net login, and what matters is whether that login transfers cleanly. Check what else is attached to it, whether the email can be changed, and what the seller is actually handing over. A listing that does not say is a listing to ask about before paying.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between WoW Forever and Classic Era?
Classic Era is vanilla frozen permanently with no new content. Forever continues vanilla Azeroth forward with roughly 1,000 new quests, four new zones, nine dungeons, new raids and the Skyborne race, while keeping the cap at 60.
Is WoW Forever the same as Season of Discovery?
No. Season of Discovery runs in seasons that end; Forever is permanent — Blizzard calls it “not a mode, a season, or a new version of Classic” — with major updates announced for Spring and Summer 2027.
Which WoW version should I buy an account on?
Forever if you want the newest content, Classic Era if you want something that will never change, TBC Anniversary for current raid progression, and Hardcore only if you accept that a death ends the account.
