How Many GB Is GTA 6? File Size, Preload Date and Storage

Rockstar has not announced how many GB GTA 6 is, and neither the PlayStation Store nor the Microsoft Store shows a real install size yet. What is confirmed: preloading opens on 12 November 2026, one week before the 19 November launch, so plan to clear around 200 to 250GB on your PS5 or Xbox Series X|S before then.

The pre-order press release, issued on 24 June 2026, states that "players who pre-order digital versions of Grand Theft Auto VI will be able to begin pre-loading on November 12, 2026." It gives no size. Rockstar has also not added a storage line to its own GTA VI pages.

How big GTA 6 is likely to be

Without an official figure, the useful reference points are Rockstar's own previous games and what the press is planning around. None of these numbers is the GTA 6 size. They tell you how much room to leave.

Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018): 105GB on PS4 and 110GB on Xbox One, the last brand new Rockstar game.
Press planning range for GTA 6: roughly 150 to 200GB for the base game, plus 20 to 50GB for a day one patch, per GTA BOOM and Viced.
Lower estimate: GamesRadar has suggested around 120 to 130GB and up, as summarised by GTA Intel.

The map is reported to be about three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2, which is why most estimates land well above RDR2's 105GB. Treat that as reasoning, not data.

The 676.7GB claim is fake

A post that spread in December 2025 said Xbox had "confirmed" a 676.7GB install. There was no Xbox source behind it, and forum users pointed out that the screenshot referenced Xbox One, a console GTA 6 is not coming to. A 676GB game would not fit on a launch PS5, which has 667GB of usable space in total.

The no-disc box changes the maths. With GTA V and RDR2, disc buyers installed most of the game from the disc. GTA 6 ships as a code inside a case, so every player, digital or "physical", pulls the entire game over the internet. Your connection speed matters as much as your free space.

GTA 6 preload: when and how

Preloading is the whole point of the one week gap. You download the game from 12 November, it stays locked, and it becomes playable when your region's store unlocks it on 19 November.

Digital pre-orders: preload from 12 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Physical box: the case contains a download code. Rockstar says the physical version will be available from 12 November "to support pre-loading". If yours ships late, you start later.
Start time: Rockstar gave a date, not a clock time. Pre-orders opened at midnight local time on 25 June, and console preloads usually follow the same pattern, but that is not confirmed for GTA 6.

Rockstar used the same seven day window last time. Red Dead Redemption 2 preloads opened on Friday 19 October 2018 at 12AM ET, exactly one week before its 26 October launch.

How to preload on PS5

Pre-order GTA 6 on the PlayStation Store, or redeem the code from the box through the PlayStation Store's Redeem Code option.
Let the console stay connected to the internet in rest mode so downloads can run overnight.
From 12 November, open GTA 6 in your game library and start the download if it has not begun on its own.

How to preload on Xbox Series X|S

Pre-order on the Microsoft Store, or redeem the box code in the Store app.
Check that the install location is the internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card.
From 12 November, find GTA 6 in My games and apps and start the install if it has not begun on its own.

Storage by console: will GTA 6 fit?

GTA 6 is a PS5 and Xbox Series X|S game. Here is what each console gives you to work with, before anything else is installed.

Xbox Series S is the tight one

On a 512GB Series S, a 200GB GTA 6 would take more than half of the 364GB you can actually use. Delete or archive big games before 12 November rather than on launch night.

Games optimised for Series X|S must run from the internal SSD or an official Storage Expansion Card. A cheap USB drive works as a "vault": move your other games there, then move them back when you want to play.

Expanding PS5 storage

Sony's requirements for an internal M.2 drive are specific:

PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD, with 5,500MB/s or faster recommended.
Capacity between 250GB and 8TB.
A heatsink or heat transfer sheet is required.

USB drives also work on PS5, but only for storage. Sony says PS5 games on USB extended storage must be copied back to console storage or the M.2 SSD before you can play them.

Before launch: a short checklist

Free at least 200GB on the drive you will play from by 11 November.
Leave the console connected in rest mode so the preload can run overnight.
If you bought the box, have the code in hand on 12 November.

Frequently asked questions

How many GB is GTA 6?

Rockstar has not said. The PlayStation Store shows no size and the Xbox listing shows only a 328.76MB pre-order placeholder. Press estimates put the base game around 150 to 200GB, so clear 200 to 250GB to be safe.

When can I preload GTA 6?

From 12 November 2026, one week before the 19 November launch. This applies to digital pre-orders and to the download code inside the physical box. Rockstar has not given a start time.

Does the GTA 6 physical copy have a disc?

No. Rockstar's announcement says the physical version contains a download code inside the box. You download the full game either way, so you need an internet connection.

Will GTA 6 fit on an Xbox Series S?

Probably, but it will be tight. The 512GB Series S has about 364GB usable. If GTA 6 lands near 200GB, it will take more than half of that, so delete other games first.

Can I play GTA 6 from an external USB drive?

No. On PS5, games on USB must be copied back to internal or M.2 storage to play. On Xbox, Series X|S games must run from the internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card.

Is GTA 6 on PC?

Not at launch. Take-Two's 7 August 2026 earnings release lists GTA 6 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only, so there is no PC file size to plan for yet.
