GTA 6 takes place in Leonida, a fictional state modelled on Florida, with a modern Vice City (Rockstar's Miami) as its main city. Rockstar has officially shown six regions, Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park, and says the whole map is about twice the size of GTA V's.

Where is GTA 6 located?
Rockstar's official GTA VI site calls the setting "Vice City, USA" and pitches the story as "the darkest side of the sunniest place in America." Jason and Lucia's crime spree starts in Vice City and grows into a conspiracy "stretching across the state of Leonida."
Rockstar never prints the word Florida on its own pages, but nobody needs it to. Game Informer's 29 September 2026 cover story opens with an essay on Florida, and Rockstar environment art VP Paul MacPherson told the magazine the team picks landscapes and landmarks that serve the game rather than copying every real location. North of Leonida sits Gloriana, the game's stand-in for Georgia.

Vice City
Rockstar calls it "still the sun and fun capital of America." The official page names Ocean Beach with its pastel art deco hotels, the panaderías of Little Cuba, the Tisha-Wocka flea market and the VC Port, "the cruise ship capital of the world." GTABase matches Ocean Beach to South Beach, Port Vice City to PortMiami and the Stockyard district to Wynwood and Allapattah.
Leonida Keys
A "tropical archipelago" where life "isn't flashy but it's easy." Official screenshots show seaplanes, a long island bridge, beach bars, boat parties and scuba diving among coral, eels and turtles. This is where Jason works for drug runner Brian Heder. The Florida Keys are the obvious model, down to a Seven Mile Bridge lookalike.
Grassrivers
Rockstar's "primordial expanse" of mangroves, gators and airboats, with the Vice City skyline visible across the water. The name nods to the Everglades nickname "River of Grass." Official art shows police chases through the swamp and hunters posing with a dead alligator.
Port Gellhorn
"Cheap motels, shut-down attractions, and empty strip malls," running on "malt liquor, painkillers, and truck stop energy drinks." Rockstar's "forgotten coast" line echoes the real Forgotten Coast of the Panhandle, and press links the area to Panama City and Panama City Beach.
Ambrosia
Leonida's industrial heart, where "the Allied Crystal sugar refinery provides the jobs, while the local biker gang provides almost everything else." GTABase points to Clewiston, a sugar town that markets itself as "America's Sweetest Town."
Mount Kalaga National Park
Rockstar describes "a national landmark up against the state's northern border" with hunting, fishing and off-road trails, plus "hillbilly mystics and paranoid radicals" in the backwoods. Screenshots show dirt bikes, kayaks and a cougar stalking deer. GTABase compares its red clay gullies to Providence Canyon in Georgia.
Other official place names
The region pages are not the only source. Rockstar's Ultimate Edition descriptions, published on the official site, name more locations:
- Washington Beach, where the Ultimate Edition Squalo boat is docked.
- Gambit Bay, named as a fishing spot.
- Stockyard, home of the Stock 305 clothing store and Electric Fang Tattoo.
- Watson Bay, location of the Paradise Garage.
- Lake Leonida, home of One-Eyed Willie's off-road mod shop.
- Southside Vice City, turf of the PTT Youngin$ gang.
The August 2026 Extended Look added Megamundo, a Spanish-language TV network venue that GTABase matches to One Biscayne Tower.
How big is the GTA 6 map?
The only official size claim is relative. In Game Informer's cover story, Rockstar's Aaron Garbut said Leonida is about twice the size of GTA V's map, with more detail, density, interaction and interiors. Rockstar has not published square miles or kilometres.

The GTA 6 Mapping Project began on GTAForums in 2022. Contributors match trailer frames to real Miami and Florida street views, then plot each landmark on a shared map. Its widely cited 125 km² figure (about 2.55x GTA V) came from overlaying coordinates on the projected layout. Treat it as a good guess, nothing more.
Rockstar's "twice GTA V" counts more than area. Garbut tied it to density, interaction and interiors. A map with fewer empty mountains and more enterable buildings can feel far larger than its square footage, so the fan km² figure and Rockstar's claim can both be right.
What Rockstar has not revealed yet
- The full in-game map. No official overhead map has been released. The Vice City Collection collector's box includes a souvenir poster of the full Leonida landscape, but it ships on launch day.
- Region unlocks. Rockstar has not said whether all six regions are open from the start. As precedent only, GTA V opened almost its entire map early in the story.
- GTA Online's map. Online details are unannounced.
Narrative lead Rupert Humphries told Game Informer the story cannot take players everywhere, so plenty of Leonida exists purely for exploration.
