WoW Forever Mage and Shaman Deep Dive: Key Changes Explained

NewsOctober 15, 2026·METAMMO Team

Blizzard's official Mage and Shaman class deep dive for WoW: Forever went up on October 7, 2026, and two follow-up edits on October 8 confirmed that Elemental Mastery and Nature's Guidance are gone. Mages get Frostfire Bolt at level 40 and a reworked Arcane tree, while Shaman get hour-long weapon imbues, faster totems and new Call spells.

Mage: Frostfire Bolt and cross-school builds

The Mage section focuses on mixing schools. Frostfire Bolt is a new spell learned at level 40 with a 3 second cast. It counts as both a Fire and a Frost spell, so talents from either tree can boost it, and it adds a damage over time effect plus a slow.

Arcane Blast becomes the 11-point Arcane talent: a 2.5 second cast that stacks up to 4 times and empowers your other spells. Frost gains Ice Lance (300% damage against Frozen targets) and Fingers of Frost, and Cold Snap moves to 21 points with a 10 minute cooldown.

Cone of Cold also gets a shorter duration, aimed at farmers and boosters who kite large packs. See our Mage class page.

Shaman: less setup, more casting

All four weapon imbues (Rockbiter, Flametongue, Frostbrand, Windfury) now last 60 minutes instead of 5 and stack with Sharpening Stones, Weight Stones and Wizard Oil. Blizzard added Rockbiter to that list in an October 8 edit. Totems use a 1 second global cooldown, buff totems last 5 minutes, and Resistance Totems become raid-wide.

Call of the Elements (level 20) lets you save four totems and drop them with one 3 second cast. Call of the Spirits (30) and Call of the Ancestors (40) add two more sets. Totemic Recall and Totemic Projection round out the kit.

Elemental: Mastery out, Lava Burst in

On October 8, Blizzard added the missing note: Elemental Mastery is removed. The developers wrote that it held the spec back, because raising PvE damage while keeping it would have made Elemental too strong in PvP. Lava Burst is the new 31-point talent, and Lightning Overload returns.

Wowhead's Elemental analysis (October 9) points out the catch. Lightning Bolt drops from 3 to 2.5 seconds and Chain Lightning from 2.5 to 2, but their Spell Power coefficients fall to 71.4% and 57.1%. The author also says Shaman base spell damage was cut harder than for Mages or Priests.

Restoration lost Nature's Guidance (noted October 8) and gained Water Shield at 11 points and Riptide at 31. Full trees are on our Shaman talent calculator and the Shaman class page.

What it means for leveling

Wowhead expects Elemental to feel playable by the mid-20s instead of level 40. The October 8 beta build also made the level 30 Shaman weapon quest easier. If you want to skip the slow early levels, see leveling prices; the full list of class edits lives on class changes.
