WoW: Forever Temporary Economy Holds: Blizzard's New RMT Tool

NewsOctober 15, 2026·METAMMO Team

Blizzard has added a new anti gold buying tool to WoW: Forever called the Temporary Economy Hold. An account suspected of selling or receiving gold from real money trade (RMT) can lose access to trade, mail, guild banks and the Auction House while Blizzard investigates. The hold ends automatically if the suspicion turns out to be false.

What a Temporary Economy Hold is

Kaivax described the hold as the latest step in Blizzard's fight against RMT, meaning gold bought or sold for real money. Instead of waiting until an investigation is finished, the system freezes the economic side of a suspicious account first.

The goal is to stop questionable gold before it spreads into the economy, while giving the team time to investigate.

What is restricted during a hold

The forum post lists four restricted features:

FeatureStatus during a hold
Player to player tradeRestricted
In game mailRestricted
Guild banksRestricted
Auction HouseRestricted

Who is affected and what triggers it

According to the post, a hold can apply when an account is suspected of involvement in RMT on either side: selling gold or receiving it. Blizzard did not publish the exact signals it uses, and it did not list thresholds such as gold amounts.

Kaivax added that players who play normally are unlikely ever to see it, though false positives may occur while the system is tuned.

How long a hold lasts

Blizzard gave no fixed duration. A hold ends in one of two ways: it is removed automatically once the flagged activity is investigated and cleared, or the account receives enforcement action if RMT is confirmed.

A hold by itself does not count as a permanent strike on the account. Only a later finding that the activity was RMT related leads to penalties.

How it fits Blizzard's wider RMT stance

The hold is the newest step in a series of statements. On September 28, 2026, Blizzard said it would remove illicit gold from recipients and could close buyer accounts. On October 1 it added that buyers face gold removal, suspensions or permanent closures, and announced a trade warning about gold from unknown sources.

On the October 8 podcast, Josh Greenfield said over 2,100 beta accounts were closed for buying gold, plus almost 1,600 for selling or botting. More detail is in our GDKP and gold buyer ban report.

What this means for players

For most players nothing changes. If you tip a mage for a portal or pay a crafter, those are normal trades; Greenfield said the team has become good at telling such trades apart from RMT. Earning your own gold is covered in our WoW: Forever gold guide, and the wider game systems are listed on our systems page.

If you want to save time on leveling instead, our boost and leveling price overview lists the options. Buying a ready character has its own checks, described in what to look for in a Forever account.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Temporary Economy Hold a ban?

No. It limits trade, mail, guild banks and the Auction House while Blizzard investigates. A ban or other action only follows if RMT is confirmed.

How long does a hold last?

Blizzard has not given a set length. It stays until the investigation is finished, then it is lifted or replaced by account action.

Can a hold hit an innocent player?

Blizzard says false positives may happen while the system is tuned. In that case the hold is removed and leaves no permanent strike.

Will other WoW versions get this system?

Blizzard plans to bring it to all versions of WoW if it proves successful.
