WoW Forever systems and professions
Forever's new systems are one loop, not four separate features: crates drop as you play, you fill them with profession materials, they pay a currency that buys recipes, and the Legacy tree makes every step of that better. Professions sit in the middle of all of it.
The loop in one paragraph
Kill things anywhere in the world and Waylaid Crates drop. Fill a crate with profession materials and hand it in at your faction depot for Merchant's Favor. Spend that currency on profession recipes available nowhere else. Meanwhile every profession crafts a campfire that buffs your whole group for an hour, and the Legacy tree — which is account-wide — increases your crate payout and shortens the campfire cooldown.
That is why professions are not optional in Forever the way they were in Classic. A gathering profession now has a guaranteed sink that is not the auction house, and a crafting profession brings something to a group even before it can make raid gear.

Waylaid Crates
Drop from enemies anywhere in the world; you fill them with profession materials and hand them in.
- Crates drop while you are doing anything else — questing, grinding, levelling. They arrive empty.
- You fill a crate with profession materials. This is the mechanism that gives gathering a floor price: herbs and ore have a guaranteed sink that is not the auction house.
- A filled crate pays Merchant’s Favor at your faction depot — 5 to 20 depending on crate tier and quality in beta data. Blizzard has not published the amounts.
Three Corners, Redridge Mountains
West of the Crossroads, the Barrens
Merchant’s Favor
The new currency crates pay out in. Spent on profession recipes you cannot get any other way.
- Earned at 5 per filled crate, and from the Legacy tree at a better rate once you have invested in it.
- Spent with the Azeroth Commerce Authority or Durotar Supply and Logistics on profession recipes and other rewards.
- This is the quiet reason to level a profession in Forever even if you never intend to craft for a raid: the recipe list behind this currency does not exist elsewhere.
Camping and campsites
Every profession crafts a campfire item that buffs everyone nearby for an hour.
- Each profession makes its own placeable campfire. The buff applies to everyone in range, not just the crafter — which turns a profession into something you bring to a group rather than something you do alone.
- Upgraded versions let you craft profession items at the campsite itself, removing the walk back to a city forge or anvil.
- There is a one-hour cooldown on placing camping features. The Legacy tree can shorten it.
The Legacy system
Account-wide progression unlocked through challenges, spent on perks across several trees.
- Progress is account-wide, so time on one character is not wasted when you roll another — the single biggest structural departure from Classic.
- 65 Legacy Challenges across six categories each give one Legacy Point. You usually earn the first when a character reaches level 25 — or skill 150 in a non-gathering profession, or after exploring the whole world map.
- Points are spent per character in three trees — Professions, Adventure and Resourcefulness — with a cap of 16 per character at launch. Collections and Legacy Points carry across rulesets, except into Hardcore.
- The Professions tree feeds directly back into the loop above: Performance Bonus sometimes pays extra Merchant’s Favor. Beta data shows three ranks at 5, 10 and 15% for double Favor; Blizzard has not published the numbers.
- Field Guide cuts the one-hour cooldown on placing camping features.
Systems FAQ
What are Waylaid Crates in WoW Forever?+
Crates that drop from enemies anywhere in the world. You fill them with profession materials and turn them in at your faction depot for Merchant’s Favor (5 to 20 per crate by tier in beta data) — Three Corners in Redridge Mountains for the Alliance, west of the Crossroads in the Barrens for the Horde.
What is Merchant’s Favor used for?+
It buys profession recipes and other rewards from the Azeroth Commerce Authority and Durotar Supply and Logistics. Those recipes are not obtainable another way, which is why professions matter in Forever even to players who do not craft.
How does camping work in WoW Forever?+
Every profession can craft a placeable campfire that buffs everyone nearby for an hour. Upgraded versions let you craft profession items at the campsite instead of returning to a city. There is a one-hour cooldown on placing them, reducible through the Legacy tree.
Is the Legacy system account-wide?+
Yes. Legacy progress is earned through challenges and applies across the account, so levelling an alt is not starting from zero on the perk side.
Which profession is best in WoW Forever?+
Blizzard has not published the full recipe lists behind Merchant’s Favor, so a ranking now would be guesswork. What is structurally true: gathering professions gained a guaranteed materials sink through crates, and every profession gained a group-wide campfire buff — both of which raise the floor on professions that were previously only worth taking for their endgame crafts.

Professions cost gold before they make it
Levelling a crafting profession in Forever eats gold faster than gathering earns it in the first weeks, and Merchant’s Favor recipes need materials you will be buying. These are the pre-order prices sellers quote today.
