Mobile Legends EXP lane guide
The EXP laner plays alone on a side lane for most of the match. You win it by surviving the early trades, reaching your item spikes and turning up at the Lord pit at the right moment.
Updated 30 October 2026 for Season 42, patch 2.2.16a (October 2026).
What you are there for
The job of the EXP laner
The lane is named for the EXP bonus its solo laner receives. That extra experience lets the EXP laner reach level 4, with the ultimate, faster than most of the map. Most EXP laners are fighters; some are tanks or tank-fighters such as Edith or Fredrinn when the team needs a second frontline.
- Hold your lane. Do not lose your outer turret early. An open side lane exposes your jungle.
- Win or neutralise your matchup. You do not have to kill the enemy laner; you have to stop them from getting ahead.
- Join fights at objectives. The EXP lane sits close to one of the river objective pits, so you are often the first ally to arrive.
- Split-push late. Fighters clear waves and take turrets alone better than anyone.
Hero pool
Best EXP lane heroes, Season 42
| Style | Heroes | Good against |
|---|---|---|
| Sustain bruiser | Yu Zhong, Thamuz, Esmeralda, Alucard | Melee fighters, short trades |
| Burst diver | Chou, Paquito, Arlott, Dyrroth | Squishy carries, mages in rotation |
| Frontline | Edith, Fredrinn, Terizla, Khaleed | Teams that lack a tank |
| Scaling | X.Borg, Aulus, Lukas | Slow, defensive games |
Patch notes, Season 42: patch 2.2.16 buffed Aulus, Aldous, Argus, Lukas and Alpha, nerfed Paquito and reworked Masha. The October hotfix 2.2.16a took part of the Aulus buff back. Use these as a guide to what you will face, not as a reason to drop a hero you know well.
Minutes 0 to 8
A minute-by-minute plan
| Time | What to do |
|---|---|
| 0:00 to 0:30 | Walk to lane through your jungle; check the river bush for an invade |
| First waves | Last-hit, trade when the enemy walks forward for a minion |
| Level 4 | Ultimate unlocked: your first real kill window |
| Around 2:00 | The first Turtle spawns; if it is on your side of the river, be ready to join your jungler |
| 2:00 to 6:00 | Keep your wave balanced near your turret, and watch the river for the enemy jungler |
| 8:00 | The Lord spawns; your lane is the gateway to its pit on your side |
The Turtle appears at 2:00 and the Lord at 8:00 as of Season 42. Which side of the map each pit sits on matters for you; always check where the current objective is on the minimap. See the objective timers guide.
Winning the lane
Trading and wave control
- Trade when your minions outnumber theirs. Minions deal real damage early; the hero with the bigger wave wins the trade.
- Short trades against sustain heroes. Against Thamuz or Alucard, hit and walk away before their healing pays back.
- Long trades if you are the sustain hero. Esmeralda and Yu Zhong want the enemy to stay.
- Freeze the wave near your turret when you are behind. You farm safely, and the enemy has to walk further to fight you, closer to your jungler.
- Push the wave before you rotate. Leaving lane with your wave pushed in means you lose less farm and the enemy laner must stay to defend.
Mid game
Rotations: when to leave the lane
- When your jungler goes for the Turtle or Lord on your side.
- When your team fights within a short walk of your lane.
- When the enemy laner has backed to base and your wave is pushed.
- Never when your outer turret is low and the enemy wave is about to arrive.
A good EXP laner arrives at fights from the side, through the jungle, and catches the enemy carries in a pincer. Walking down the middle lane to join a fight wastes your best angle.
After minute 12
Split-pushing in the late game
With two or three items, a fighter can take a side lane alone and force the enemy to answer. That creates space for your team at the opposite side of the map. Split only when the rest of your team can wait, and return the moment two enemies disappear from the minimap or the Lord fight starts.
The 2026 annual map change (from 28 September 2026) rotates battlefield variants. In the Golden Turret variant, destroying any turret shares a lot more gold with the whole team, which rewards split-pushing; the Healing Turtle variant sends an allied Turtle down the enemy’s strongest lane instead of giving a shield.
Build
EXP lane emblems, spells and items
The Fighter emblem with Brave Smite is the default for bruisers; burst fighters may run the Assassin emblem. Flicker is the usual battle spell; Vengeance, Petrify or Execute fit some heroes. Common items: War Axe, Hunter Strike, Queen’s Wings, Sea Halberd against healers, and a defensive item matched to the enemy, such as Antique Cuirass or Radiant Armor. The fighter guide explains each item.
Matchups
Playing against common EXP lane types
| Enemy type | Their plan | Your answer |
|---|---|---|
| Sustain bruiser (Thamuz, Alucard) | Long fights in the wave | Short trades, anti-heal early, do not fight in their wave |
| Burst fighter (Paquito, Chou) | One combo, one kill | Stay healthy, bait the combo, fight back when it is on cooldown |
| Tank or tank-fighter (Edith, Fredrinn) | Survive and roam | Push and take plating; punish them when they leave |
| Ranged or mage EXP (Harith, Lylia) | Poke you from range | Approach from bushes, ask your jungler for an early gank |
| Scaling hero (X.Borg, Aulus) | Farm safely to late game | Pressure early and deny farm before their item spikes |
Matchups depend on patch and items, so treat these as starting points. The fastest way to learn a matchup is to play against it in Classic and watch the replay of the first four minutes.
Map duties
Teleporting to fights and defending your turret
EXP laners are often the last to arrive at a fight on the opposite side of the map. The Flying Cloud battlefield feature, back in the 2026 annual map change, can help you redeploy quickly when it is active in a match. Otherwise, the rule is simple: if your team fights on the far side and you cannot arrive in time, take the enemy turret on your side instead. That trade is usually worth it.
- When your outer turret is low, stay and defend until the next wave clears.
- When the enemy EXP laner disappears, warn your team in quick chat and push your wave.
- When the Lord spawns on your side, clear your wave first, then walk to the pit through your jungle.
Avoid these
EXP lane mistakes
- Fighting the enemy laner every time you see them, even when your wave is smaller.
- Ignoring the first Turtle when it is close to your lane.
- Split-pushing while your team fights the Lord.
- Building pure damage against a team with heavy burst.
- Diving the enemy turret at level 2 or 3 without your jungler.
