Mobile Legends mage guide
Mages deal magic damage from range and carry much of a team’s crowd control. Their power is front-loaded: they peak in the early and mid game, and they win matches by turning that window into turrets and objectives.
Updated 30 October 2026 for Season 42, patch 2.2.16a (October 2026).
Burst, control, sustained
Three kinds of mage
| Type | What it does | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Burst | Deletes one squishy target with a short combo | Eudora, Aurora, Kadita, Selena |
| Control | Area crowd control and zone denial | Vale, Yve, Luo Yi, Kagura |
| Sustained | Deals damage over a long fight | Lunox, Cecilion, Valir, Lylia |
A team needs at least one source of magic damage: if all five deal physical damage, the enemy can stack armour and ignore your attacks. That makes the mage the usual mid laner. A burst mage counters enemy marksmen and assassins; a control mage wins grouped fights and objective contests; a sustained mage grows stronger in long fights and scales into the late game.
Hero pool
Mages worth learning in Season 42
| Hero | Strength | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Eudora | Targeted stun into huge burst | Easy |
| Nana | Wave clear, transforming ultimate, a passive that saves her | Easy |
| Aurora | Freezes and area damage | Easy |
| Pharsa | Flies above the map for a long-range bombardment | Medium |
| Vale | Area damage and a powerful knock-up ultimate | Medium |
| Yve | Her ultimate draws a grid that controls a whole fight | Medium |
| Valentina | Copies the enemy’s ultimate | Medium |
| Kagura | Umbrella combos; buffed in patch 2.2.16 | Hard |
| Lunox | Switches between chaos and order forms | Hard |
| Luo Yi | Yin-yang marks and a team teleport | Hard |
| Cecilion | Mana-stacking damage that grows all game | Medium |
Season 42: patch 2.2.16 buffed Kagura, and the hotfix 2.2.16a (October 2026) nerfed Eudora. Odette and Kadita were adjusted. Newer mages such as Zhuxin and Zetian have dedicated players; learn an easy mage first.
Where to stand
Positioning: the whole skill of a mage
- Stand behind your tank and to the side. Directly behind the tank you are in the path of every enemy skill shot aimed at the tank.
- Keep a wall or a bush between you and the enemy assassin. Assassins enter from fog. If you cannot see the enemy jungler on the map, assume they are close.
- Hit the closest safe target. A mage who walks forward to reach the marksman often dies to the fighter in front of them.
- Cast at max range, then step back. Many mage combos have a delay; you do not need to stand in place watching the result.
Mechanics
Mana, skill shots and wave clear
Most mages use mana. Running dry in the middle of a fight is a common reason a mage stops contributing. Use the purple buff when your jungler offers it, and do not spam skills on minions when the wave will reach your turret anyway. Several mages, such as Cecilion, scale their damage with maximum mana, which changes the build.
Mage skill shots are aimed. Aim where the enemy will be, not where they are: most heroes walk in a straight line while farming, and the moment after an enemy uses a dash they cannot dodge. Practise against A.I. with the aim indicator switched to manual if your hero rewards it.
Wave clear is your second job after damage. Clear the mid wave quickly with area skills so you can leave the lane and help elsewhere. The mid lane guide covers rotations.
Build, Season 42
Mage items, emblems and spells
| Goal | Item | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Burst core | Genius Wand | Reduces magic defence of the target |
| Cooldowns and mana | Enchanted Talisman | For cooldown-heavy mages and supports |
| Anti-heal | Glowing Wand | Burning damage and reduced healing on the target |
| Late burst | Holy Crystal | Large magic-power boost |
| Magic penetration | Divine Glaive | Best as the third item or later |
| Ultimate reliance | Fleeting Time | Lowers the ultimate cooldown after kills and assists |
| Survival | Winter Crown or Immortality | A freeze to escape divers, or a revive |
Boots: Arcane Boots (magic penetration) for burst mages in lane, Magic Boots (cooldown reduction) for skill-heavy mages. The Mage emblem adds magic power, cooldown reduction and penetration; Impure Rage (extra damage based on the target’s max HP, plus mana recovery) is a common core talent, and Lethal Ignition suits mages who hit the same target repeatedly. Battle spells: Flicker for most mages, Flameshot for long-range finishing, Purify if the enemy has heavy crowd control. Details in emblems and battle spells.
Over the match
Early, mid and late game as a mage
- Early (0 to 4): win the mid lane through wave clear and safe trades. Help your jungler contest the enemy buff or the first Turtle.
- Mid (4 to 12): this is your strongest window. Rotate with your roamer to the side lanes, take turrets and set up the Turtle.
- Late (12+): stay with the team. You are the main magic damage, but you die in two hits. Fight around objectives, and only from behind your frontline.
Survival
Playing against the heroes that hunt mages
Every enemy draft has at least one hero whose job is to kill you. Recognise it on the loading screen and adapt your build and position from the first minute.
| Threat | Examples | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| Dashing assassin | Lancelot, Gusion, Ling, Hayabusa | Stand near your tank, save crowd control for them, Winter Crown or Flicker |
| Point-and-click lock-on | Saber, Franco, Kaja | Purify or an immunity effect; stay behind minions against hooks |
| Long-range poke | Pharsa, Lesley, Xavier | Use bushes and walls; do not stand still between casts |
| Invisible approach | Natalia, Aamon | Stay out of unwarded bushes and keep a teammate close |
Getting better
How to practise a mage
- Learn your combo in a practice match until you can do it without looking at the buttons.
- In Classic, count how often you clear the wave before the enemy mid laner does.
- After each match, check your damage share in the results screen; a mage with low damage usually stood too far back or left fights too early.
- Practise predicting movement: aim slow skill shots ahead of the enemy instead of at them.
Mana is easier to manage once you know your skill costs. Look them up in the hero’s skill screen and try to finish each fight with enough mana for one escape or one crowd-control skill.
Avoid these
Mage mistakes
- Using the main crowd-control skill on minions.
- Walking forward to reach a target behind the enemy tank.
- Ignoring Glowing Wand against a healing draft.
- Farming the jungle when the mid turret is under attack.
- Arriving at the Turtle without mana.
Answers
Mobile Legends mage guide: FAQ
What is the easiest mage in Mobile Legends?
Eudora, Nana and Aurora. All three have simple combos and a reliable source of crowd control.
Should mages always play mid lane?
Usually. Some mages roam or play side lanes in specific drafts, but the mid lane gives them the fastest rotations and the most impact.
When should a mage buy Glowing Wand?
Early, when the enemy team has a hero who heals a lot, such as Estes, Alucard or a life-steal fighter.
Which battle spell is best for mages?
Flicker in most matches. Flameshot on long-range mages, and Purify against teams with a lot of stuns.
