Mobile Legends tank guide
A tank wins games by deciding where and when the fight happens. Damage is someone else’s job; your job is to make the enemy fight on your team’s terms, or not at all.
Updated 30 October 2026 for Season 42, patch 2.2.16a (October 2026).
The job description
What a tank actually does
Tanks have the most health and defence in the game and the least damage. That trade only pays off if the tank does three things well: start fights at the right moment, stop enemies from reaching the carries, and give the team vision. Almost every tank roams, so the tank is also the player who walks first into unwarded bushes so the marksman and mage do not have to.
- Initiator. Lands crowd control that lets the team collapse on a target: Tigreal, Atlas, Johnson, Lolita.
- Pick tank. Grabs one enemy out of position: Franco, Khufra (against dashes), Grock (walls that split teams).
- Frontline. Stands in front for long fights and soaks damage: Hylos, Baxia, Belerick.
Many tanks do two of these. The difference is what you look for when the game starts: an initiator watches enemy grouping, a pick tank watches the edges of the map, and a frontline tank stays near the carry.
Hero pool
Tanks worth learning in Season 42
| Hero | Type | Signature tool | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tigreal | Initiator | Ultimate pulls a group together | Easy |
| Atlas | Initiator | Ultimate drags several heroes; a jump from his mech | Medium |
| Khufra | Pick / anti-dash | Bouncing ball that stops dashing heroes | Medium |
| Franco | Pick | Long hook and a suppressing ultimate | Easy to start, hard to master |
| Johnson | Initiator | Turns into a car and can carry an ally across the map | Medium |
| Grock | Pick | Walls that trap or split enemies | Medium |
| Lolita | Initiator | Shield that blocks projectiles | Medium |
| Hylos | Frontline | Massive health; a slowing ring | Easy |
| Baxia | Frontline | Anti-heal on his rolling attack | Easy |
| Gatotkaca | Initiator | Long-range jump with a taunt | Medium |
Patch 2.2.16 (September 2026) adjusted Hylos and reworked parts of Bruno and Masha in other roles, but left the core tank kits above unchanged. Pick heroes for your team’s needs before the meta: a team with no crowd control needs Tigreal or Atlas more than a third frontline.
Minutes 0 to 4
Early game as a roaming tank
- Help your jungler start. Stand near the buff your jungler begins with, so a surprise invade does not take it.
- Go to the Gold lane. The marksman is the weakest laner early. Stand in the bush beside the lane and threaten the enemy marksman and roamer.
- Take your roaming blessing early. Boots with a roaming blessing give you extra gold and EXP from assists and share income with the lowest-earning ally.
- Be at the Turtle before 2:00. Walk into the river first and check the bushes around the pit; your jungler will come to take it.
- Rotate to mid after the Turtle to help the mage, or back to Gold lane if the enemy roamer is there.
Engage timing
How to start a fight that your team can win
The most common tank mistake is not a bad engage; it is a good engage that nobody follows. Before you jump in, check four things on the screen:
- Your damage is in range. Your marksman and mage must be able to hit the target within a second or two of your crowd control landing.
- Their key skills are down. If the enemy just used a stun, a long escape or a cleanse, the fight is safer.
- The numbers. Do not start a 4-against-5 unless the missing enemy is far away on the minimap.
- Where you are fighting. Fights near your turret, or at an objective your team controls, are better than fights in the enemy jungle.
Sometimes the right engage is no engage: walk forward, show yourself and make the enemy use their skills on you, then back off. The enemy wasted cooldowns and your team can take the objective safely. That is still a tank doing the job.
Items, Season 42
Tank build by what the enemy has
Tanks build almost only defensive items. The order depends on the enemy team. Item names below are current as of patch 2.2.16a (October 2026); none of the defensive items changed in Season 42.
| Situation | Item | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Enemy has healers or life-steal | Dominance Ice | Anti-heal aura; also cuts attack speed |
| General first item | Thunder Belt | Bonus damage and slows after using skills, plus defence |
| Long fights, shields or regeneration | Oracle | Increases shields and regeneration you receive |
| Enemy physical skill damage | Antique Cuirass | Reduces the damage of the attacker who hit you |
| Enemy basic-attack marksman | Blade Armor | Reflects basic-attack damage |
| Enemy sustained magic damage | Radiant Armor | Stacking magic defence |
| Heavy crowd control or a late game | Brute Force Breastplate, Immortality | Speed and defence after skills; a revive |
Boots: Tough Boots against crowd-control-heavy teams, Warrior Boots against mostly physical teams. For the roaming blessing, see the support guide and roam guide; tanks usually take Conceal (to set up ambushes) or Encourage.
Before the match
Emblem and battle spell
The Tank emblem gives HP, hybrid defence and HP regeneration. Among its talents, Concussive Blast adds area damage to your basic attacks and suits engage tanks, while Focusing Mark makes the enemy you damage take more damage from your allies and suits tanks who hit the right target. Some tanks run the Support emblem for movement speed and cooldown reduction.
| Spell | Best for |
|---|---|
| Flicker | Initiators who need a surprise engage, such as Tigreal and Atlas (Flicker + ultimate) |
| Vengeance | Frontline tanks that are focused in fights |
| Petrify | Tanks that want a second area stun |
| Aegis | Tanks that are dived early; less common |

After minute 12
Late game: vision and peel
- Walk ahead of the team into dark areas. Death timers are long late in the match; losing the tank costs less than losing the marksman.
- Stand between the enemy assassin and your carry. If the enemy has Lancelot, Gusion or Ling, your crowd control is for them, not for the enemy tank.
- Control the Lord pit. Stand at the entrance, not in the pit. Your job is to stop the enemy from contesting while your team hits the Lord.
- Do not split-push. A tank alone in a side lane cannot kill a turret and is not in the next fight.
Answers
Mobile Legends tank guide: FAQ
What is the best tank in Mobile Legends?
It changes with the patch and with your team. Tigreal and Atlas are the most dependable initiators, Khufra is the answer to dashing heroes, and Franco is the best pick tank in skilled hands.
Does a tank need damage items?
Rarely. Thunder Belt and Dominance Ice add some damage through their effects; the rest of the build should answer the enemy team’s damage types.
Should a tank play EXP lane?
Some tanks can, and some players run tank or tank-fighter heroes in EXP lane when the team lacks a frontline. In most drafts the tank roams.
Which battle spell is best for tanks?
Flicker for initiators, Vengeance for frontline tanks that take a lot of damage.
