What is the difference between WoW Retail and Classic?
WoW Retail is the current game, now on the Midnight expansion: level cap 90, 13 classes, seasons of Mythic+, raids, delves and player housing. WoW Classic recreates older versions with slow leveling and fewer systems, and WoW Forever is Blizzard’s separate fresh-start version launching on 4 November 2026. Characters never move between them.
Should I play WoW Retail or Classic?
Retail if you want the current expansion, many classes, Mythic+, delves and housing, with fast leveling and seasons. Classic if you want the original slow progression, fewer systems and a stronger focus on the open world and long raid tiers.
Does one subscription cover Retail and Classic?
Yes, a World of Warcraft subscription gives access to both Retail and Classic. WoW Forever has its own editions; see our Forever price page.
Can I move characters between Retail, Classic and Forever?
No. Each version has its own characters; a character bought for one cannot be played in another.
Which account should I buy?
The one for the version you will actually play. Retail accounts are valued on titles, rare mounts, item level and Mythic+ rating; Classic accounts on realm, faction, gear and gold; Forever accounts on launch-era progress.
