Mobile Legends beginner’s guide

Mobile Legends: Bang Bang is a five-against-five MOBA on phones: two teams, three lanes, a jungle between them, and a match that ends when one base crystal falls, usually in 12 to 20 minutes.

Updated 30 October 2026 for Season 42, patch 2.2.16a (October 2026).

The win condition

What you are actually trying to do

Every match is played on the same map, the Land of Dawn. Each team has a base in its corner with a crystal, and three lanes run from base to base: one along the top, one through the middle and one along the bottom. Each lane is guarded by three turrets per side: an outer turret, an inner turret and a base turret. Waves of minions spawn from both bases and walk down the lanes on their own. A team wins by destroying the enemy crystal, and to reach it you have to break at least one lane of turrets first.

That is the whole game. Kills are useful because a dead enemy cannot defend a turret, not because the score at the top of the screen wins anything. Beginners lose many matches they are “winning” on kills because nobody walked to a turret afterwards. Keep one question in your head for the whole match: what can my team take right now? A turret, a buff, the Turtle, the Lord or nothing yet.

Who goes where

The five positions

Five players, five jobs. The game calls the positions lanes, even though two of them do not stay in a lane. When you queue in ranked or draft modes, you pick a preferred lane before the match, and the community expects each team to have one of each. Picking a sixth job, such as a second jungler, almost always loses.

The five MLBB positions and what they do
PositionWhereJobUsual roles
EXP laneThe lane with the EXP bonus for the solo lanerHold the side lane alone, survive, join fights at the Turtle and Lord, split-push lateFighter, sometimes tank
Gold laneThe lane with the gold bonus for the solo lanerFarm safely, become the main damage dealer by mid-gameMarksman
Mid laneThe middle laneClear waves fast, help the side lanes, set up killsMage
JungleBetween the lanes, with RetributionFarm jungle camps, take buffs and objectives, gank lanesAssassin, fighter, some marksmen and tanks
RoamMoves with the team, no fixed laneProtect allies, start fights, give vision, carry the team’s gold bonusTank, support

Each position has its own guide in this section: EXP lane, Gold lane, Mid lane, Jungle and Roam. If you have no idea which suits you, start with Roam or Gold lane: both have simple, readable jobs and forgive mistakes better than the jungle.

What a hero is built to do

The six hero roles

A role describes the hero’s kit; a position describes where the player stands. The two overlap but are not the same thing: a fighter can jungle, a tank can play EXP lane, and a few marksmen jungle. As of October 2026 there are 133 heroes, and many carry two roles.

Before your first ranked game

Controls and settings worth changing on day one

The default settings are playable, but a few changes make a big difference. Open the settings from the lobby before you play your first real match.

  1. Turn on the frame-rate option your phone can sustain. A smooth 60 fps or higher matters more than graphics quality. If your phone heats up, lower graphics first and keep the frame rate.
  2. Learn the targeting priority. In the controls you can choose what basic attacks lock on to. Since patch 2.2.16 the “Lowest HP” option uses effective HP, which accounts for penetration. Beginners do well with the default and a separate button to attack minions and turrets.
  3. Enable the separate minion and turret buttons if your layout does not have them. Last-hitting a minion or hitting a turret without accidentally running into an enemy hero is one of the most useful habits in the game.
  4. Use the camera drag or the minimap tap to look around without moving. Glance at the minimap every few seconds; most deaths of new players are enemies who were visible on the map for a long time.
  5. Set up quick chat. “Attack the Turtle”, “Retreat” and “Gather” cover most of what you need to say in solo queue.

Minutes 0 to 4

The early game: farming and last hits

Gold buys items and EXP raises your level, which unlocks and upgrades skills. Both come mostly from minions and jungle creeps, and the player who lands the final hit on a minion gets the full gold. In the first minutes, the hero with the better farm usually wins the lane even with fewer kills.

  • Stand behind your minions. Enemy minions attack the closest target. If you stand in front of your wave, you take damage for nothing.
  • Do not hit the enemy turret early unless the wave is with you. A turret attacks heroes that enter its range without minions in front of them, and the first turret shots hurt a lot at level 1 to 3.
  • Level 4 is the first power spike for most heroes because the ultimate unlocks there. Know when the enemy laner reaches it and respect it.
  • Back to base when low, not when empty. Your base heals you fast. Walking back with 30% health is better than dying with 10% and losing the wave and 10 to 20 seconds of respawn time.

Every lane has a different rhythm. The jungler wants to reach level 4 before the first Turtle at 2:00, the roamer wants to help the jungler take the Turtle and the mid laner wants to clear the wave and look for a side lane to help. The jungle and objectives guide explains the timings.

Your build has three parts

Items, emblems and battle spells

Every hero takes three things into a match: an emblem (picked before the match, a set of stats and talents), a battle spell (one active ability on its own button, such as Flicker or Retribution) and items bought during the match with gold.

The three layers of a build
LayerWhen you chooseWhat it doesBeginner rule
EmblemBefore the matchBase stats plus three talentsUse the emblem named after your role
Battle spellBefore the matchOne active skill with a long cooldownFlicker if unsure; Retribution if jungling
ItemsDuring the match, in the shopSix slots: boots plus five itemsUse the recommended build at first

The recommended build in the shop is fine for your first weeks. Change it once you understand why: buy anti-heal (Dominance Ice, Sea Halberd or Glowing Wand, depending on your hero) against healers and life-steal heroes, a magic defence item against a mage-heavy team, and Blade Armor against a basic-attack marksman. The emblems and battle spells guide covers the pre-match choices role by role.

What wins the middle of the game

Objectives: buffs, Turtle and Lord

Apart from turrets, the map has neutral objectives in the jungle and river. Timings below are as of Season 42 (October 2026); the in-game timer on the minimap is the final word.

Main neutral objectives
ObjectiveFirst spawnWhat it gives
Purple buff and Red (orange) buffStart of the matchPurple: cooldown reduction and mana or energy. Red: bonus damage and a slow on attacks. Each side has one of each.
LithowandererEarly in the match, in the riverA small river creature with a modest reward for the team that takes it
Turtle2:00Gold and EXP for the whole team; it returns a few times until the Lord replaces it
Lord8:00Joins your team and pushes a lane; late Lords are the strongest push in the game

A good rule for new players: when your team kills two or more enemies, the next stop is the Turtle before 8:00 and the Lord after it. When your team loses a fight, do not walk into the objective pit; defend your turrets and wait.

Heroes, battle points and ranked

Progression in your first week

  1. Finish the tutorial and the beginner tasks. They give free heroes, battle points and starter rewards.
  2. Play Classic until you own a hero for each position. Ranked needs a pool of heroes; the game also requires a minimum number of owned heroes for ranked draft later on.
  3. Buy heroes with battle points (BP), not diamonds. BP comes from matches, tasks and weekly rewards. Diamonds are the premium currency and are better spent on skins or passes.
  4. Upgrade your emblems. The emblem screen uses emblem fragments from tasks and events. A levelled emblem is a free stat boost every match.
  5. Start ranked at Warrior and climb through Elite, Master, Grandmaster and Epic. Draft pick, with bans, opens at Epic. See the ranked guide.

Keep your credit score high. It starts at 100, rises to 110 with good behaviour and drops when you leave matches or are reported. Below 90 the account cannot queue for ranked.

Fix these first

Ten mistakes almost every new player makes

  1. Chasing a low-health enemy under their turret.
  2. Two players in the jungle, or nobody in a side lane.
  3. Ignoring the minimap for twenty seconds at a time.
  4. Walking through unwarded bushes alone in the mid-game.
  5. Fighting the Lord when the enemy team is missing from the map.
  6. Buying the same build against every team.
  7. Using the ultimate on a minion wave or a single tank.
  8. Backing to base right as an objective spawns.
  9. Typing in chat instead of playing.
  10. Learning a hard hero like Fanny or Ling in ranked.

If you would rather skip the grind

Starting with an account instead of from zero

A new account starts with a handful of heroes and no skins. Building a collection takes years of events, passes and draws, and some limited skins never return. If you want a roster and skins from day one, METAMMO sells Mobile Legends accounts that are checked by hand before they are listed; each listing names the skin count, collector title, Legend and collab skins, and rank. Every account carries a lifetime guarantee against recovery by a previous owner: if that ever happens, we replace the account or refund it. It does not cover bans. See the Mobile Legends accounts catalogue, and the login and transfer guide for how a handover works.

Answers

Mobile Legends beginner’s guide: FAQ

How long is a Mobile Legends match?

Most ranked matches last 12 to 20 minutes. Very one-sided games end earlier, and matches between careful teams can go past 20 minutes, when the Lord becomes strong enough to end the game on its own.

What is the easiest role for a beginner?

Roam (tank or support) and Gold lane (marksman) have the clearest jobs. Tanks like Tigreal and Franco survive mistakes, and marksmen like Layla and Miya teach farming and positioning.

Should I play ranked straight away?

Play Classic until you own at least one comfortable hero for every position. Ranked rewards consistency, and losing stars early only slows the climb.

What does the jungler need?

The Retribution battle spell and boots with a jungle blessing. Without both, the jungle clears slowly and the team falls behind on Turtle and Lord.

How do I get heroes for free?

With battle points from matches and tasks, hero trial cards, event rewards and the free hero rotation. Diamonds are not needed for heroes.
